Spelling

There will be thirty-six units in spelling. Spelling tests will be given each Friday. Every six weeks a spelling handout with six spelling word lists will be sent home for students and parents. Spelling books will remain in the classroom.

Grammar

Grammar will make up for most of the course of the study of seventh grade English as a firm foundation in grammar is essential.

• First Quarter- Parts of Speech chapters 9-13

• Second Quarter- Chapters 8, 15,16,17

• Third Quarter- Chapters 19,20,21

• Fourth Quarter- Chapters 22,24,25,26

Composition

Meaningful composition assignments enhance skills taught in the English curriculum. As such, writing will be taught and practiced throughout the year as well as being integrated into the study of literature.

Literature

Themes and forms of literature will be taught intermittently throughout the year. Periodically, writing assignments will accompany reading assignments. Due dates will be announced at the time of the assignment is given. Unfamiliar vocabulary words from the stories may also be assigned when appropriate. Check tests on the stories will be given at the beginning of class the day after a reading assignment is made. If time permits we will read two novels this year.

Grading Procedures

• Home work, literature check tests, pop tests 10%

• Major Exams 55%

• Vocabulary tests (spelling, literature words) 20%

• Nine Weeks Test 15%

Students are STRONGLY encouraged to appropriate space in their notebooks to records grades so that they may be constantly aware of their academic standing. Grades will be published in the form of a progress report in the middle of the grading period and in the form of a report card at the end of the grading period.

Materials

Students in seventh grade English will need a three-ring binder, pencils, black ink pens, and college-rule loose-leaf paper
