Nieblas(nee-ah-bliss)michael_nieblas@chino.k12.ca.us ext. 8835 (email is preferred)7th GRADE ELA 2019-20 COURSE DESCRIPTION(This is subject to change)This class will focus on helping students to analyze, interpret, present, and express their own ideas. We will work together to build up their individual skillset to include reading, thinking, and presenting information at a deeper, more critical level. This course is designed to help students grow as lifelong learners, not only in their association with the texts we study, but in the underlying themes and reflective literary elements found in impactful literature. COLLECTIVE OBJECTIVE.We will approach each piece of literature from various associated Literary Schools of Thought/Analysis (New Historic, Psychoanalytic, Symbolic, to name a few) so that they will gain the most from reading each piece and ultimately apply the impact of the texts to their own interactions with their world. Each text and the lessons they impart will build towards the student’s own advancement of a deeper understanding of the Humanities as well as themselves.EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS.Students are expected to develop critical thinking, writing, and presenting skills. They are expected to keep pace with reading assignments, as well as challenge themselves to grow in their choices of reading material and their own interpretation of them. They are expected to be present, on time, and prepared for class each day. They are further expected to complete the six (6) required outside reading assignments (3 novels, 1 play, 1 poetry collection, and 1 short story collection).REQUIRED TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS.California Collections. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2017.Three-ring binder (with ELA section)ELA Notebook (Composition Books will serve just fine) for Classroom NotesPen, Sharpened Pencil, and One HighlighterAccess to a computer and online databases for instruction, lessons, assessments, and supplemental materials/videosGRADING POLICIES AND ASSIGNMENTS.CAPA utilizes the 60/40 Grading Scale: 60% of the entire grade is based on Assessments (Essays, Presentations, and Final Projects) and 40% of the entire grade is based on Formative Assignments (Homework, Classwork, Preparation, Participation, and Drafts).Grades will be earned in a traditional value scale of 10% per letter grade, D through A:A (90-100+); B (80-89); C (70-79); D (60-69); and F (0-59)Work Habit as well as Citizenship are as follows:O (Outstanding); S (Satisfactory); N (Needs Improvement); and U (Unsatisfactory); Scores of U will result if students are witnessed belittling or putting down others’ intelligence, attempts, or character.Students are required to read outside of school for 30 minutes per day; this will be logged and written about Mondays-Thursdays and turned in on Fridays for Homework. All classwork/essays/presentations will be assigned with a clear due date; if time is not managed properly, the student may need to utilize weekends to complete assignments. Each trimester, two major reading Assessments will take place: 1. A One-Pager (due roughly by the six week mark), focusing on a Play, a Collection of Poetry, or a Collection of Short Stories; and 2. A Formal Book Report on a Novel. Each Unit of Study will culminate in a presentation or formal written essay/argument. JUNIOR HIGH LATE WORK POLICY.Each late assignment will be marked down one (1) letter grade per school day late to the point of being worth 50% of the original assignment value. Any late assignment may not be turned in after the end of the Unit of Study in which it was assigned.Late/Incomplete work will only be accepted once the student meets with me to go over why the assignment was late and time is given for the student to receive tutoring on the assignment to ensure that they are not missing any steps.Alternative Assignments will be up to teacher's discretion for potential points.DISCIPLINE POLICY.I adhere to the disciplinary protocol as outlined by both Chino Unified School District, and Cal Aero Preserve Academy. CLASSROOM RULESBe Respectful of ALL persons at ALL timesAcknowledge that you DO NOT have the right to impede, distract, undermine, or otherwise challenge the learning opportunity of othersChallenges to these very basic and simple rules will be met with strict consequences.REFERENTIAL SUBJECTS.It is often the case where elements/examples of popular or classic literature/film/art/music are discussed in relation to the analysis of the texts in the course. These are incorporated to fully grasp the literary elements while relating to the students’ experiences as adolescents. If brought up/discussed/viewed, they are utilized for educational purposes and have been edited to remove any/all questionable content.STATEMENT OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY.Finally, academic dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism in any capacity) directly contradicts the entire purpose of education, and it will not be tolerated. If a student plagiarizes (copies without giving due recognition to an original source—even the act of “mixing up the words”) they will receive a 0% on the assignment, regardless of the amount plagiarized, or the importance of the assignment, and due recommendation for further disciplinary actions will be made. Additionally, a score of “U” for both Citizenship and Work Habits will be given for the closest trimester report card. Make-ups for plagiarized work will not be accepted. If a student is caught using my room to cheat on another class’s assignment, they will face a repercussion of having an assignment in ELA be marked down to a “0” grade. All grades will be posted online through the Aeries website; it is your responsibility to check it regularly.4631055115570I look forward to working with each of you.M.
