Welcome to Language Arts! I want to introduce you to the rules and expectations for the class. By following these rules and expectations, you will learn new concepts and enjoy learning this year.

Class Rules:

1. I can be on time and prepared.

2. I can respect others (speak kind words, listen, and keep body and objects to myself).

3. I can remember to not chew gum, eat or drink in the classroom.

4. I can follow all school rules.

Materials:

Pens (blue or black) or Pencils

Loose-leaf paper

One pocket clip folder

Coming into the class:

You are expected to arrive on time, enter the classroom quietly, sharpen your pencil if necessary, go to your assigned seat, and begin your warm up. Once the bell rings, you will have two additional minutes to complete your warm up. After the warm up, you should immediately write your daily agenda and learning targets in your planner.

Class work:

Class work is designed to help you practice key concepts from the day’s lesson. It is expected that all class work be completed in the time allotted. If you do not complete the class assignments during class, you are expected to complete those assignments for homework, and turn it in the following day.

Homework:

You will have homework on most days. Homework is designed to develop responsibility and practice concepts taught in class. The homework will consist of a variety of reading materials, project-based work, studying, skills practice and vocabulary activities. You are also expected to read at home daily.

Late/Absent work:

Late work will be accepted due to absences according to JCPS policy.

Test/Quizzes:

Content tests and quizzes will be given at various times. You will be notified of all tests at least a week in advance and all quizzes at least a day in advance. Quizzes will consist of that week’s lesson. Vocabulary tests will consist of common grade level words as well as words from readings. After the end of each unit, there will be a unit test that includes every skill practiced during the length of the unit. During testing (including quizzes), you will not be permitted to talk or get out of your seat. You will need to have at least two pens/pencils. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a “0” for the test (quiz). If you are communicating in any way during a test (quiz), you will receive a “0” for the test (quiz).

Grading:

Your grade will be based on how many points you earn during each grading period. Your grade will be based on your homework, class work, assessments, and daily work. You and your parent can view your progress on Parent Portal online at
