7th Grade Life Science Syllabus

American Military Academy

Mrs. Paizy

Welcome to the 7th grade! I expect this to be the most successful year that you have experienced. To help you get off to a smooth beginning, I want to share the following information with you.

Course Overview:

Seventh grade students will study the structure and function of living things. Topics will include Diversity of Organisms, Classifying Life, Cells, Human Body, Heredity, and Evolution. An emphasis on the process of scientific investigation is continued in 7th grade science. This includes the generation and testing of ideas, prediction, measurement, data collection and reporting, collaboration, interpretation and communication of results, evaluation, summarization, and the examination of the application and relevance of scientific research. It is intended that students will actively develop scientific investigation, reasoning, and logic skills through the study of physical science concepts.

Course Objective

▪ Provide knowledge of facts, processes, basic concepts, principles and applications of science.

▪ Develop skills of observation, descriptions, rational and creative thinking processes.

▪ Develop investigative skills handling materials and equipment useful in science.

▪ Develop skills in collecting, organizing and communicating scientific data and information.

Concepts and Skills

Throughout the year, we will focus on a variety of concepts that are not only important in science, but have life skills applications as well.

• Organizing information

• Thinking Critically

• Using the scientific process

• Representing and applying data

• Measuring in SI (Metrics)

• Classifying and sequencing

• Making and using charts, tables and graphs

• Earth and space sciences

• Introduction to Physical Sciences

Daily Work: Homework assignments are designed to prepare the students for the next class lesson. You must be prepared for class to receive the full benefit of the lesson that day. For full credit, assignments must be neat, complete, and submitted on time. Once that lesson has passed, the potential benefit of the assignment has also passed.

Quizzes: Quizzes are a part of this course; for you to do well, you must be prepared. Students can expect quizzes to cover material currently being covered in class, labs, and readings.

If you should miss a quiz, it is your responsibility to make it up the day you return. It is always best to complete a missed quiz as soon as possible. In all cases, a missed quiz must be made up by the end of the week it was given; to receive credit.

Late Work: If you should miss class due to an absence or illness, it is your responsibility to make up the work, get notes, or hand in any assignments that were given.

• If you know in advance that you will be missing class, you are expected to check assignments before you go.

• All late work must be handed in directly to the teacher.

Grade Calculation: Your grade will be based off the total number of points you have accumulated over the quarter and semester. This class is a practical based class, therefore your grade will be based on the labs/activities, quizzes, and your test scores. Your work will be compiled into a neatly organized notebook and lab notebook. Terms grades will be based off of the total number of points you have accumulated though daily work, labs, test and quizzes.

Daily Procedures:

Upon entering the classroom, students should:

1. Turn in any homework and get materials out for class

2. Take a seat in your assigned desk

3. Read the day’s objective and copy any given homework assignment

4. Begin working on your warm-up.

End of Class Procedure:

1. Teacher will alert you when to start getting ready to leave. The bell does not dismiss you.
