7th Grade Language Arts Course Syllabus

Dutchtown Middle School

Course Description:

Seventh graders will continue to develop an appreciation of written and spoken language. Students will use oral language and written language, and media and technology for expressive, informational, argumentative, critical, and literary purposes. As seventh graders begin to experience more sophisticated pieces of literature for study and analysis, they will begin to choose more complex literature to read for enjoyment. Seventh graders often gravitate towards one series or genre, or they read extensively on a topic of personal interest; it is our aim to broaden their spectrum and love for reading, writing, and learning.

By the end of their grade seven English-language arts (ELA) experience, students will be able to complete a Close Reading assignment, answer and write Text-Dependent Questions, and Write from Sources, in keeping with Henry County’s ELA focus areas. They will also be able to analyze and edit their own writing to include the acceptable use of basic conventions, ideas, and organizations (e.g. varied adjectives and adverbs, sentence structure, etc.) and they will continue to develop their individual voices, styles, and creativity in writing. Because the degree to which a student observes writing conventions is often proportionate to that individual’s reading prowess, a natural increase in writing, editing, and proofreading skills will be the end result of the wonderful skills that will be development throughout their seventh grade school year. If you would like information concerning the Georgia Standards for Excellence, please visit the Department of Education website and the Henry County School website

Textbooks:

We do not solely “teach from a textbook;” The Elements of Writing and The Elements of Literature are the Henry County textbooks that are used as supplemental resources. If a textbook is borrowed or issued, it is the responsibility of the student to keep up with it. Students that lose, misplace, destroy or do not turn in textbooks will be required to pay for the textbook. We will also use novels that the students may or may not be able to take home, and for which they will be responsible for keeping and maintaining in the classroom or at home.

Grading policy:

The grading policy is consistent throughout the entire language arts department at Dutchtown Middle School and was established according to the guidelines set forth in the county handbook. Grades will be calculated using the following percentages: Classwork & Homework 35% Quizzes/minor projects 20%

Semester Exam 15% Major Assessment (tests, projects) 30%

Infinite Campus/Grades Online:

Henry County Schools provides parents and students access to grades via the Internet. Using the Internet, parents and students are able to log on to Infinite Campus to view student grades. Please contact the school office to obtain your password.

• Led or mechanical pencil (if mechanical pencil is used, the student is responsible for his or her refills and should have enough refills so that there is no infringement of student learning)
