Curriculum

During the school year, we will work together to discover mathematics by investigating the world around us to build the foundation for Algebra. Here are some course topics:

Similarity Rational Numbers

Scale Factor 3-D Geometry

Proportional Reasoning Linear Relationships

Data Comparisons Theoretical Probability

The cost to replace a lost or damaged book is $10.

Classroom expectations

In order for us to make our class the best it can be, we need to have some guidelines.

Basic Respect and Common Sense Classmates are Teammates

• Be on time. * Listen to each others’ ideas

• Be polite * Stay together during work time

• Be aware of impact of choices * Put in the effort

• Be patient

• Be ready

You should expect me to follow the same guidelines. But also, you can expect me to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment, to be enthusiastic, to be eager and available to help, and be fair and reasonable in my expectations and evaluations.

Supplies

Loose-leaf paper

Small spiral notebook – One subject

Pencils

Bottle of Glue (This will stay in the class.)

Calculator (any kind-scientific is nice) – you will need one with you each day in class

Grading

Grades are weighted: Practice 30% (the things you do while learning)

Assessment 70% (the things you do to show me that you’ve learned)

Your overall percentage will determine your letter grade:

100 A + 89-87 B + 79-77 C + 69-67 D +

99-93 A 86-83 B 76-73 C 66-63 D

92-90 A- 82-80 B - 72-70 C - 62-60 D -

Assessments:

On a quiz:

o Any student receiving 90% on a quiz has mastered the concepts, and moves to enrichment/extension activities.

o Any student not receiving at least 90% then receives a grade of “not yet” and goes back to review activities. Then they take a “Second Chance” Quiz. This quiz is different than the first quiz, but covers the same material.

Unit tests are final and there are no second chances.

Homework

• Bad news: There will be homework pretty much every day.

• Good news: the homework will make you better thinkers, and shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes per class period.

• Grading: Basic daily assignments are worth 5 pts (completion and effort). Late assignments will be accepted until the end of the unit for 3 points.

• Projects: There will be 2 major projects during the year-One each term.

Absences

• Students will be responsible for getting any make-up work from an absence.

• If you miss a test, you will need to arrange a time with me, after school, or during study time. You get 2 weeks to make up the test.

Help

• Check the Moodle site for resources and my help sessions.
