COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introductory study of the beauty and design of God’s glorious creation which was made for His own pleasure and is continually upheld and preserved by His almighty and faithful hand. Throughout this course students will use various methods of observation, research, analysis and experimentation to develop and test their own predictions and to increase in understanding scientific laws, processes, facts, and theories. Some of the major topics included in this course relate to the classification and organization of living things; the solar system and beyond; the earth’s changing surface; interactions of matter and energy; electricity and magnetism; and motion. The goal of this course is not only to prepare students for success in higher science courses, but also to develop or increase their appreciation for all things made and governed by the laws of the eternal God of heaven. Ultimately, this course purposes to direct each student’s heart to praise and adore his/her Creator for His wonderful acts of creation and redemption.

REQUIRED TEXT: Macmillan McGraw-Hill Science, Grade 6

COURSE LAYOUT: This course is divided into three major disciplines of science: Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. These disciplines are divided into six units which are then subdivided into a total of thirteen chapters. An average of three chapters will be covered each quarter of the school year.

GENERAL COURSE GUIDELINES: The following guidelines are stated to the end that all things might be done decently and in order within the 6th grade science classroom. These guidelines do not intend to detract from or to replace any of the school’s policies as they are stated within the Family Handbook.

1. Assignments specified as homework are to be completed by the beginning of the class period for which they are due. Assignments that are turned in after the beginning of the class period will be deducted 10% for being one day late. Incomplete, missing, and/or late assignments will also result in the student missing recess time for the purpose of completing the assignment. At the discretion of the instructor, and/or if students have no legitimate excuse for submitting the assignment late, assignments will be graded as zeros if they are not turned in by the beginning of the next class period. Contact with the student’s parents will generally result after a student receives a zero for a missing assignment.

2. Appropriate behavior during all lab exercises will be strictly enforced. Students will be expected to clean up properly after themselves during each lab.

3. Appropriate cooperation and diligence is mandatory for all group work settings. When students are required to work in groups, each student will be expected to be respectful and kind to the other group members.

4. When students are permitted or required to work in groups, each student is responsible for submitting his/her own work.

5. Students are to come prepared to class with all of the following items:

a. Science Textbook

b. Science Journal (a spiral notebook designated for science notes)

c. Pens and pencils

d. Assignment book

e. Any notes or assignments that are necessary for participation in class

Students who are unprepared for class will be required to stay in during recess to better organize their materials.

ON-LINE RESOURCES: You are encouraged to take advantage of the online study guides that are located on my website at . These study guides are a very useful tool for preparing for the weekly vocabulary quizzes. Students who do not have internet access are welcome to access these study guides while at school.
