As classes fill up, students without an Alternate Choice will be put into courses according to availability.Student SignatureParent SignatureDateElective Course DescriptionsBeginning Band:This full-year course focuses on the basic technique of playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Students will also learn how to play their instrument by reading standard musical notation. Participation in performances that occur outside of the school day is required. Home practice is expected. Concert Band:This full-year course builds on the skills taught in beginning band. Students will learn more advanced concepts and techniques on their instrument in preparation for performances and contests. This class participates in a parade in the spring which requires after school rehearsal time. Participation in performances that occur outside of the school day is required. Home practice is required.?Beginning Orchestra:This class is for all 6th, 7th and 8th graders who would like to learn the Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass. We do two concerts a year. We learn a variety of musical styles including classical and fiddle. All students need to have their own instrument which they can rent or buy from a music store. The school also has instruments to rent for a reduced amount.?Orchestra:This class is for all string students who have had at least one year playing experience. We continue to build on the skills we learned in beginning orchestra. We have two concerts a year, participate in Solo/Ensemble Contest, Orchestra Festival, school assemblies and Recruiting Concerts. All students need to have their own instrument.?Choir:Squire Choir: Non-auditioned 7th and 8th grade choir, open to all 7th and 8th grade students who like to sing.? The choir learns music from different cultures and time periods.? Students will learn basic music reading skills, including rhythm and notes. ??This choir performs about 4 concerts per year.Mountain Voices: Auditioned 7th and 8th grade advanced choir.? Students audition for this class in the spring for the following school year.? New students are welcome to audition when they enroll at MVMS.? ?This choir performs at all choir concerts, as well as school assemblies and various community events.? The choir learns music from different cultures and time periods.? Students will learn basic music reading skills, including rhythm and notes.Intro to Media Productions:Media Productions is an introductory course into the Arts and Communication career pathway open to 7th and 8th grade students.? Students in this class will use video cameras, non-linear editing software, tripods, and microphones to learn to tell stories using visual images. This course covers the production process including pre-production, production, and post production.? Students will learn broadcast writing, animation, storyboarding, scripting, composition, and camera techniques.?Stem Publisher (Yearbook):Students will create the Mountain View Yearbook as well as a school newspaper.? The central focus of the course is related to a successful production of the school yearbook and at least two school newspapers covering items that are happening at Mountain View, within our school district, and/ or community.? We will be using curriculum based on journalism standards.? The class will also learn proper photography,?interviewing techniques, as well as meeting deadlines.? Students will have the opportunity to learn techniques found in Adobe Photoshop to create professional photographs. Graphic Design:This is a course that introduces middle school students to the careers in graphic design as well as a brief introduction into the application of artistic and computer techniques and technical skills to the commercial art and advertising art fields. Students will learn about appropriate communication and employability skills, safety and Internet acceptable use policies. They will research topics such as: computer-assisted art and design, printmaking, concepts sketching, technical drawing, color theory, imaging, studio technique, communication skills and commercial art business operations. Students can pursue a more in depth Graphic Art & Design course at the high school level.Wearable Art:This is an introductory course to Wearable Art (a CTE and STEM course) and will be an exploration of techniques and process leading to the development of ideas. Students will be learning the fundamentals of art and design, then combining this knowledge with science and technology. Units will include creating wearable clothing/objects and jewelry using basic electrical circuits, copper plating, recycled materials, wood, textiles, resins, and casting materials. This course has an emphasis on planning and precision. Students are encouraged to take risks, analyze and redo if required.Game Design/Apps for Fun:This is a yearlong introductory course giving students the basic fundamentals of game design and creating apps for phones and tablets.? Students will work in teams and independently and learn the various roles of programmer, animator, artist, writer and sound engineer.? Game Design is first semester and Apps for Good is second semester. The class uses a variety of programs including GameStar Mechanic, , Microsoft Touch Develop and App Inventor puter Applications:This is a yearlong introductory course giving students the basic understanding of the Microsoft Suite-Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.? Students will also learn how to make a professional Web Page using Adobe Dreamweaver (what industry uses).? Students will gain skills in using Adobe Photoshop, making apps (App Inventor), and creating games using GameStar Mechanic. Intro to Photography: This course will help the students become well rounded in the fundamentals of digital photography. Four areas of instruction will be emphasized: How cameras work, how composition works, how lighting works, how to use photo editing software. Students will, generally, receive basic instruction, demonstration, and see samples of the desired outcomes, at the beginning of each period. They will be allowed to go outside and shoot assignments, based on what they are learning. Perhaps the most useful part of classroom instruction will be reviews of photos students have shot. They will see what makes a successful photo and what does not.? ................
