Course: Human Growth and Development

Description: This is a comprehensive course designed to guide you through a variety of information on the process of human growth and development. You will explore the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of individuals across the lifespan. You will investigate theory and its everyday application. You will also explore the significance of appropriate nutrition, physical and emotional care across the lifespan. Links will be made to parenting, family, culture, community and the workplace.

Texts: Lifespan Development (Goodheart-Willcox)

Each of you will check out the text for the course. You are required to bring your textbook to class each time we meet.

Assessments and projects will account for 70% of your cumulative grade with daily work accounting for 30%.

Student Objectives for the Course:

Students will:

1) analyze the principles of human growth and development.

2) examine conditions that influence human growth and development.

3) examine the effects of heredity and environment on human growth and development.

4) analyze the influences of social, economic, technological and political factors on development.

5) describe the effects of communication on human growth and development.

6) examine physical development across the lifespan.

7) examine emotional/social development across the lifespan.

8) examine cognitive development across the lifespan.

9) understand the effects of moral development through the lifespan.

10) examine the role of nurture on human growth and development.

11) identify the effects of gender, ethnicity and culture on individual development.

12) demonstrate the effects of life events on an individual’s physical, intellectual, social and emotional development.

13) analyze strategies that promote growth and development across the lifespan.

14) explore the role of family and community support systems in meeting human growth and development needs.

Class Attendance/Make Up Work:

The attendance policy will be followed as stated in the student handbook. As with all classes, attendance is very important and imperative for good grades. It is YOUR responsibility to get make up assignments and turn in makeup work upon return. LATE WORK IS SUBJECT TO POINT DEDUCTIONS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE CLASSROOM TEACHER. NO MISSING WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR GRADING AFTER THE END OF EACH QUARTER. You can expect a letter grade deduction for each day a missing assignment has not been turned in.

RETAKE POLICY

The HSE/FACS retake policy is:

1) Retakes will be allowed for ONLY failed assessments;

2) Retakes will be allowed ONCE per failed assessment;

3) The highest points possible on a retaken assessment will be 75%, or a “C”;

4) NO retakes on daily work will be allowed;

5) Retakes on assessments must be completed within the quarter they were originally administered.

CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS:

Rules and disciplinary procedures will be followed as stated in the student handbook. Additional expectations for the classroom include but are not limited to:

1) No cell phones (unless explicit teacher approval has been given, and if so then only for the sole purpose of educational use.)

2) No food or drink (water is allowed) unless teacher approval has been given.

3) Textbooks, notebooks and writing utensils are required each day (There are a limited number of extra texts and teachers will not hand out paper and pencils).

4) Be punctual and come prepared to learn. Be productive and maximize learning time by staying on task.
