SUMMER READING/WRITING 2009

LANGUAGE ARTS 6-12 (Regular, Advanced/Honors, Gifted)

NEW: This summer all students in Grades 6-8 will be required to do two assignments. The first one will be to read ONE book from their grade level (the grade they will be entering) assigned reading list and do a Reading Journal. The second assignment will be a Writing Assignment. Be sure to follow all directions carefully.

In Grades 9-12, students will be required to do three assignments. Students will read ONE book from their grade level (the grade they will be entering) assigned reading list and do a Reading Journal. The second and third assignments are Writing Assignments. Be sure to follow all directions carefully. Assignments vary by grade level.

Grades 6 – 12 Reading Journal

Assignment # 1: READING JOURNAL – Students are required to choose one novel from the appropriate grade level lists above and do a reading journal following the specific directions below.

1. This assignment must be typed and contain two vertical columns. Label the left-hand column CHAPTER and the right-hand column SUMMARY.

As you are reading, write a brief summary for each chapter that you read. You must do this for each chapter in the entire book.

2. The first page of your journal should be a cover page which includes the following:

-Your name

-Title of book

-Author

-Number of pages book contains

-Description of setting

-Description of main characters

-A brief description of the plot

3. The last page of your journal should be a reflection page. This page contains your

personal reaction to the book. It should be 2-3 paragraphs in length and explain what you liked about the book, didn’t like about the book, if you would recommend it to a friend, and any other opinion you have about the novel.

TEACHER EVALUATION OF READING JOURNAL:

1. It will count as your first project grade for the 2009-2010 school year.

2. Cover page that contains all necessary information.

3. Reflection page that is well thought out and developed.

4. Thorough summaries written for each chapter.

5. Visually attractive, organized, and neat in appearance.

Grades 6-8 Writing Assignment

Assignment # 2: GETTING READY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ESSAY

250 Words (approximately one typed page – double spaced)

Each school year can take a lot of work! You need to think about getting ready for the first day of school. Describe everything you should do to prepare for this important day. Please double space your essay and use correct grammar and usage.

High School years often sneak up on us and then fly by too quickly. What you do today can have a major affect on the successes or failures you have in your future. It is important to think back, as well as plan ahead, to ensure you have the best high school experience possible. To help you through this process, you will write two essays based on the questions below. Please double space each of your essays and use correct grammar and usage.

250 Words (approximately one typed page – double spaced)

What are your goals for your high school career? (GPA, Awards, Courses, Extracurricular Activities)

500 Words (approximately two typed pages – double spaced)

How has your family history, culture, and middle school experience helped mold you into the high school student you are today?

Grades 11 & 12 Writing Assignment

Assignments # 2 and # 3: COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAYS

Most colleges require applicants to write a personal essay as part of the application process. This is one of the most important elements of the application process because this is when students have the opportunity for the application panel to really learn more about who he/she really is. Often times, the essay can be the deciding factor for if an applicant is accepted or not.

To prepare you for this process, you are going to write two college application essays. Please search on the internet to view samples but do not plagiarize or you will get a zero. Please double space each of your essays and use correct grammar and usage.

250 Words (approximately one typed page – double spaced)

Describe your educational goals and motivation to attend this college. (Choose a real college or university that you are considering attending and incorporate it into your essay)

500 Words (approximately two typed pages – double spaced)

How has your family history, culture or environment helped mold the young adult you are today?

TEACHER EVALUATION OF ESSAYS:

1. They will count as your first test grade for the 2009-2010 school year.

2. The essays will be graded using a rubric to evaluate the following elements:
