WHAT AM I - Wright Museum

WHAT AM I?

1. Army Air Force bombardiers used me to find our target 25,000 feet below us.

2. I am the last existing tank from the battle at the Bridge at Remagen. Very few like me even saw service during the war.

3. Men and women in every branch of the military wore us.

4. Women like me ferried planes to bases and towed targets for gunners to practice on. We gladly did these dangerous jobs and many of us could fly up to 35 different types of planes!

5. I was used for scouting enemy territory and transportation to remote areas. I don’t fly very fast and don’t have any armaments, so I hope I have a good pilot flying me!

6. I am from New Hampshire and became famous when I helped 4 other Marines & a Navy corpsman raise a U.S. Flag on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima.

7. Aircrews studied me so they would know where the German anti-aircraft guns were. If a plane became separated from their group, they had to find their own way home over enemy territory.

8. I was used for patrols in enemy waters and became famous because of my skipper. He saved our crew after I sank, and later he became President of the United States.
