Venture - Middle School Courses

Course - 6th GRADE SCIENCE

Target Age - 6th Grade

Course Description -

“Science 6 reveals the incredible intricacies of cells and organisms, matter and energy, astronomy, heredity, the nervous system, and the immune system. This science curriculum includes exciting science experiments and projects.”

We will be preparing the students for more advanced learning as they enter the middle school grades. There will be labs, homework, and tests.

Course - ALGEBRA 1

Target Age - 8th Grade – High School

Course Description -

  Elementary Algebra by Harold Jacobs aims at student competency, providing a solid framework of skills and concepts from which to move on to more advanced mathematics. The book is divided into seventeen chapters, covering all concepts typical in a first-year algebra course. Each chapter is subdivided into lessons, and includes a summary and review section at the end. This grouping of lessons allows for a logical presentation of topics, but review is also incorporated throughout the text. Each lesson includes four exercise sets, with problems ranging from simple computation, through word and application problems, to challenging thought problems. This text combines real-life examples, carefully structured exercises, and humor to help students learn and remember. Cartoons, comic strips (such as Peanuts and Wizard of Id), interesting and creative applications, puzzles, and even poetry capture the interest of students who struggle with abstract mathematics.

Students will be required to work on this course a minimum of one hour per day. Parents will be required to grade daily work each and every school day.

Course - CHARACTER COUNTS

Target Age - Middle / High School

Course Description -

  This is a class for young men and women to focus on the importance of character. Character qualities will be studied through creative and hands-on projects. We will have lessons from nature and memorization of character quality definitions. From time to time there will be guys with guys for manly projects and girls with girls for girly activities.  Come and learn to apply God's character in your life!

Course - JOURNALISM

Target Age - Middle School and High School

Course Description –

Students will be completing monthly newsletters as well as publishing our Venture Yearbook. Journalistic research writing projects will be incorporated throughout the year. Students will have weekly assignments throughout the year which will incorporate the knowledge and understanding of journalism, the responsibilities that come with it, and the journalists from our past and present!

Course - MUSIC APPRECIATION

Target Age - Middle School and High School

Course Description –

The course objective is to gain an appreciation and understanding of classical music. This course will explore the elements of music-pitch, melody, rhythm, harmony, and form-and build a comprehensive vocabulary with which to describe and analyze musical expression.  The history of music will be structured through the study of the time periods: Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century. The student will develop an aural understanding and appreciation of music to become a better listener of classical music and to be able to identify musical form and specific works of the great composers.

Course - PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Target Age - 6th - 12th grades

Course Description –

In this course, students will focus on the development of movement, skill and knowledge. They will be encouraged to participate in assessment, Presidential Fitness, and maintenance of physical fitness to improve health and performance. Students will be taught physical fitness concepts, principles and strategies, and the application of psychological and sociological concepts, including self-responsibility, positive social interaction, and group dynamics, in the learning and performance of physical activity.

Course Description -

“The text discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics.”

Students will complete half a module every week and be tested every other week. There are reading, study guide and laboratory assignments weekly. The time spent on this class is a minimum of an hour every school day. The class time will be divided into experiments and lecture.

Course - WRITE SHOP I / GRAMMAR

Target Age - 6th grade - 8th grade

Course Description -

“WriteShop I teaches students the basics of descriptive, informative, and narrative writing. Not only do students learn to narrow their topics and choose vivid, descriptive wording, they learn to add interest to their writing by varying their sentence structure. Each lesson's Skill Builder introduces new tools and provides practice. Once a new sentence variation is introduced, students will apply it in future writing lessons. This "Learn-Practice-Do" approach helps ensure mastery.”

One lesson will be covered every two weeks and a completed paper will be due at the end of that time. Our class time will set the groundwork for the writing that will take place at home during the week. You can expect to spend approximately 45 minutes a day on this class.

Course Description -                 

Algebra 2 is a continuation of Algebra 1.  Students will learn to solve radical and second degree equations using several variables.  They will work with imaginary and complex numbers, inequalities, and systems of equations.   Students will keep their Algebra 1 and Geometry skills sharp by preparing for the SAT test with quizzes and daily assignments.  

Students will be required to work on this course a minimum of one hour per day. Parents will be required to grade daily work each and every school day.

Course - INTRODUCTORY GREEK

Target Age - 8th grade - 12th grade

Course Description -

Students will learn the fundamental rules for translating New Testament Greek into English. The course will require weekly homework, including translation and memorization.

Class will begin with a short quiz to test memory skills.  Each class will consist of grading the homework assigned in the workbook and conclude with lecture concerning the next week's assignment.

   

   The course is intense with each week building upon the next. Only the serious student should register. This is not a course for the faint of heart.

Course - MARINE BIOLOGY

Target Age - High school 9th grade – 12th grade only

Course Description –

The ocean is so vast that the combined surfaces of the earth's oceans cover 72% of our globe, yet scientists estimate that no more than 5% of the oceans have been explored! Therefore, this year at Venture we hope to "dive in" and discover this largely undiscovered and fascinating undersea world!                                                                                                             Marine Biology is the study of life in the oceans and other saltwater environments such as estuaries and wetlands.  All plant and animal life in these ecosystems are included in this course from microscopic plankton to the majestic blue whale-the largest creature in the sea-and for that matter in the world.  This Apologia course concentrates on marine wildlife and marine habitats.  Each member of the different biological kingdom that lives in the marine environment will be introduced and investigated.  Students will learn about the microscopic organisms that support life in the ocean, including details about their interesting habits and life cycles.  Throughout the year we will use the course work along with experiments and dissections to broaden our understanding of this beautifully created undersea world.

“This college-preparatory physics course is designed for the student who has completed algebra and has had an introduction to the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent. This course provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general physics, heavily emphasizing vector analysis; this text is ideal preparation for a university-level physics course. It provides the student with a strong background in one-dimensional and two-dimensional motion, Newton’s laws and their application, gravity, work and energy, momentum, periodic motion, waves, optics, electrostatics, electrodynamics, electrical circuits, and magnetism.”

Course - PSYCHOLOGY

Target Age - High School 9th grade – 12th grade

Course Description –

This course is intended to prepare Christian home-schooled students for the worldview challenges of modern psychology and provide an overview of key concepts commonly taught in Introductory Psychology.  The course will provide students with a review to CLEP Psychology for college credit by the end of the course.  Chances are high that if a student attends college that there will be an anti-Christian, atheist or humanist instructor ready to challenge their worldview.

Course - DEBATE and LOGIC

Time - Tuesday 2:30 - 3:30

Target Age - High School students.

Course Description -

Debate, asserting the truth articulately with clear logic and engaging presentation, is an art that will serve any Christian regardless of God’s calling in life.  More importantly, debate improves a student's ability to stand up for truth and witness for Christ.  The study of Lincoln-Douglas Value Debate challenges students to develop new thinking, improves public speaking, enhances logical argumentation skills, and prepares them for formal, competitive LD Debate. Students will study logic and philosophy while utilizing research skills to support oral affirmative and negative case constructions from a Biblical worldview. No apologies are made for the fact that debate is a highly competitive activity. Our mission is to inspire and equip students to boldly speak Truth with Christ-like character. It should be each student’s primary ambition to glorify God through good sportsmanship and character, as they love their fellow competitors.

Debate and Logic Class Requirements:

- Parental Service is required for this class in two ways:

1. Parents must serve at the Annual "Go Light Your World 2014" Debate Tournament

2. Parents must serve as a judge at one round robin debate in class during the fall.
