This is your district’s complete guide to training and special programs being offered through the Model Schools Program of the Capital Region. These courses are free of charge to staff in the Model Schools Districts. These districts include: Albany Diocese, Bethlehem, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Cobleskill-Richmondville, Cohoes, CTE, Guilderland, Middleburgh, Niskayuna, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, Schalmont, Schenectady, Scotia-Glenville, and Voorheesville. Descriptions, dates and the registration form for these comprehensive sessions are listed inside and on our Web page under TRAINING (). Online registration is available at: . There is a fee for Blackboard workshops unless you are a Blackboard subscriber district.
Staff in districts who do not participate in the NERIC Model Schools Service can participate in these training workshops also. The fee for the workshops is $172.00 per full day of training and $89.00 for a half day of training (a half-day consists of 2-4 hours).

What Does Technology Have to Offer—Session 1: What technology is available to you? What precautions should you take using them? This session will introduce you to the district’s computer network and the variety of applications and hardware that run on it. You will find out how to log onto the network from school or home, from a Macintosh or a PC. You will be shown several methods used to backup and save files, how to organize your desktop, and how to use the district’s email system from work or from home. You will be introduced to typical hardware available in a school district (computer, printer, phone, scanner, and digital cameras). A sampling of Internet applications will be presented that allow you to meet with colleagues online, post student assignments, make surveys, look at student test data, and find references to best teaching practices—all by letting your fingers do the walking. This session will introduce you to school resources and emphasize the importance protecting your “virtual” space by using passwords. Sign up for one session, or sign up for all three if you like.

PowerMediaPlus - Educational Video & More!: There is a new free online streaming video service available to all New York State teachers & students. PowerMediaPlus (which has replaced the United Streaming service) offers great streaming & downloadable videos and much more. Stop by this session to learn how to search for video and audio resources, create “playlists”, make connections to state learning standards, host podcasts and more! To participate you will need to have a PowerMediaPlus account. Please arrange for this through your local school district prior to the session.

Technology - A "Crash Course" for Counselors: Are you a school counselor that wants to use technology more often, but are not sure where to begin? There are so many ways to utilize technology within your guidance program, and it can actually make things easier! This course is for guidance personnel that would like to incorporate some basic technology into their guidance program. This is a beginner course, but it will cover a lot of information! Topics to be included are MS Word basics, using graphics and photos, simple spreadsheet creation, how to make a PowerPoint presentation, setting up presentations (Where do all those wires go?), Internet use, Web page creation (free online tools make it easy!), and using e-mail with attachments.
The best part of about this course? You will receive a disk filled with useful resources!

What’s So Great About MarcoPolo?: Internet Content for the Classroom is a partnership between the MarcoPolo Education Foundation and leading educational organizations that produces quality, standards-based, commercial-free Internet content for the K-12 classroom, accessible through seven discipline-specific educational Web sites. Each content partner site maintains and continues to develop a collection of lesson plans that are aligned with national content standards, and that meet rigorous levels of best, research-based practices. These lessons are now aligned with the New York State Standards as well. In this workshop, you will be provided with an overview of the MarcoPolo program, search engine, and Content Partners and given an opportunity to find content to use in your classroom.

Who Put the “i” in iMac: iPhoto, iTunes, iDVD, and Garage Band (Where is it’s “i”?) “interact” seamlessly as you and your students use photos and music in school projects. iPhoto is an easy-to-use photo management program designed to organize, edit, and save digital photos (even scanned images). iTunes allows you to build a personal music library of favorite songs, which can be used as backgrounds for iPhoto slide shows. Garage Band allows you to create music. And, iDVD allows you to copy them to a DVD and share your creations with others. Think of all the possibilities, from your favorite family vacation to archiving a school event to presenting a lesson to your class. (Photos & music will be supplied, but you may bring pictures on a laptop, a disk, CD, or camera you’d like to work with). This course is an introduction to all of the wonderful things you can do with the iMac suite on your computers.

iMovie – The Magic of Digital Video—Session 1: Digital video can be a powerful classroom tool. Students can document science experiments, create social studies historical role plays, record field trip experiences, etc. iMovie software is easy to master and allows the user to add titling, transitions, sounds, and special effects to video footage. Products can then be burned as DVD video disks and/or Quicktime files. The objective of these sessions is to provide participants with a basic "hands-on" understanding of the use of digital camcorders and editing of video with iMovie software. (With the time allotted, participants will not be expected to complete a “fully polished” final product.) Sign up for all three sessions, or feel free to sign up for individual sessions.

Make That Digital Image a Lasting Impression —Session 1: There are many ways to use digital images and video in instruction. But, before you turn that image or video loose, find out how to make it great. This session will focus on what goes into making a great picture or movie. You will first learn how the equipment works, and then you’ll learn techniques that make all the difference. Open your imagination to new ways of creating a digital image. Introduction to InspireData: Do you love Inspiration and Kidspiration? How about using a new software that allows you to explore collecting and analyzing data in table form? What about using that information to plot graphs to analyze in a visual format? Come learn about the basics of InspireData, the newest product from Inspiration software! Data literacy is the ability to answer meaningful questions by collecting and analyzing data and to make sense of the data encountered in daily life. Teachers will learn about the table view and the plot view and then try out a few of the classroom projects already built into the software with over 50 databases.

What Does Technology Have to Offer—Session 3: What technology is available to you? What precautions should you take using them? This session will introduce you to the district’s computer network and the variety of applications and hardware that run on it. You will find out how to log onto the network from school or home, from a Macintosh or a PC. You will be shown several methods used to backup and save files, how to organize your desktop, and how to use the district’s email system from work or from home. You will be introduced to typical hardware available in a school district (computer, printer, phone, scanner, and digital cameras). A sampling of Internet applications will be presented that allow you to meet with colleagues online, post student assignments, make surveys, look at student test data, and find references to best teaching practices—all by letting your fingers do the walking. FrontPage: Create a Web Site for Your Classroom
Teachers taking this course will learn to use FrontPage to create a website for their classroom and will be introduced to different techniques for implementing a website as a way to provide information to students, parents and community. Creating a Web site is also an excellent way to showcase their students’ work. Following an introductory class covering the basics, participants will have an opportunity to meet with the instructor on a monthly basis to continue to update their Web site. This course requires approximately 6 hours for completion.
Students will develop a theme and create a storyboard to plan their Web site in order to make it clear and effective. The Mystery Class and Other Collaborative Projects for Students
Seasonal change is all around us. Children see it in the length of a day, in the appearance of a flower, in the flight of a butterfly. Journey North is a free Internet-based program that explores the interrelated aspects of seasonal change. Learn about the different studies your class can participate in under each of these categories: Sunlight and the Seasons, Plants and the Seasons, Seasonal Migrations. The Mystery Class investigation is an 11-week hunt in which students try to find 10 secret "Mystery Classes" hiding around the globe. The changing amount of sunlight at each site is the central clue. Students take an inspiring journey from knowing only sunrise and sunset times, to discovering exact locations of the 10 Mystery Classes. The workshop will introduce you to the Journey North Web site, give you an overview of several of the projects, and assist you in the free registration if you choose to participate. The projects are suitable for second through eighth grade, depending on the project.

In order for information security to be effective, everyone in an organization needs to be involved. This four-week course is designed to heighten awareness about information security and intended for people who have computer and information security responsibilities. Participants will explore the basic principles of this topic by investigating current “best practices” through meaningful, team-based authentic activities. What's New in Children's and Young Adult Literature - Online
This course is designed for teachers who wish to update and enhance their knowledge of children's and/or young adult literature. The course will begin on January 22 and end on March 11. Over the 7 week duration, each class member will submit a self-introduction and write a response to an on-line article. Class members will also be required to read from 5 to 19 recent children's or young adult books which may include picture books, middle grade books or longer fiction/nonfiction titles published since 2002. Web-based links to recommended titles will be provided, but the actual selections will be up to individual participants. Class members will submit a brief book review for each title read citing curriculum/standards connections and suggestions for classroom use. The facilitators will post student reviews on the Internet offering a readily available database of titles and ideas. The course is accessed through the user-friendly Blackboard Learning System and its collaborative features. Participants who complete all the requirements will receive a certificate of completion for 15 hours of participation. Registrants will be notified by email with course access information.

Wikis are free, online Web sites that are used for collaborative authoring. This four-week overview emphasizes using wikis in the classroom and for remote document authoring.
