Mr. Kimble, Dean of Scholars

Pershing Middle School

2010-2011

Welcome to the Infinity Mathematics University! First of all, I would like to thank you for your interest in the Infinity Mathematics University. In the Infinity Mathematics University: School of Engineering & Technology, our BIG GOAL is that 100% of all scholars will master 90% of the 8th grade TAKS Math objectives. This goal will be accomplished because we operate around the following philosophy: “Math is power and we want it!” At the Infinity Mathematics University: School of Engineering & Technology, we believe that the possibilities for success are infinite.

The following information in this course manual is intended to help you become an active participant of the Infinity Mathematics University: School of Engineering & Technology, and to ensure that we have a great year. Please read it carefully and always keep it in your university binder as a source of reference.

Your university binder will contain all of the work that you do in this course only! It will be divided into five basic sections:

1. Bell Ringers

2. Collegiate Notes

3. Classwork

4. Homework

5. Assessments

It is extremely important that you keep an orderly university binder. As mentioned before, “Math is power and we want it!” This means that I expect you to have a neat, professional university binder, as it will be evaluated frequently and randomly. Having an orderly binder also will help your grade and will teach you invaluable organizational skills.

Daily Schedule

In addition to lectures, centers, group work activities, and other engaging activities, you should also expect the following every day:

• Bell Ringer: The bell ringer is the assignment that you should complete as soon as you enter IMU. This is not optional, it is required. The purpose is to put you in “Math Mode”. During the bell ringer, you must adhere to the “Silent Five”, which means that no one should be talking during the bell ringer or during the first five minutes of class.

• Objective of the Day: The objective of the day is what you should be able to do by the end of class. If you can do what it states, you are ready for the objective mastery challenge!

• Word of the Day: There will be a WOTD each day. When you hear this word, make sure you CLAP and say its meaning! The purpose of the WOTD is to help build mathematical vocabulary and for me to know if you are paying attention!

• Spiral Activity: It is very important that any objectives taught are mastered and retained. To help you with this, each day we will do an activity that will review previously learned concepts.

• Collegiate Drills: Each day we will review previous Math objectives as a class. Drills are to be done together, chorally, and must be done LOUDLY and PROUDLY!

• Speed Lightening Round: At the end of class, I will ask a series of Math questions related to the daily objective. Scholars who answer questions correctly will receive raffle tickets! Speed Lightening Rounds last for THREE MINUTES.

Infinity Mathematics University Rules

There are specific rules that you must follow in order to remain in good standing at the Infinity Mathematics University: School of Engineering & Technology. In order to ensure success at IMU, you should follow all rules at all times. At IMU, the rules are centered on POWER. Math is POWER…POWER is FREEDOM! If you follow all rules, you will reap the benefits of being a scholar of IMU; you will have more freedom than those who choose not to follow the rules of the university.

The rules of the Infinity Mathematics University: School of Engineering & Technology are as follows:

Read and write daily

Elevate your mind

Study, study, study

Participate in the learning process

Encourage your classmates to reach our goals

Call on someone when you need help

Turn in all assigned work on time

At the university, it is very important that all scholars SLANT. SLANT means:

Sit up

Listen

Ask questions

Nod your head

Track the speaker

It is very important that you remember these rules and comply with them. Whenever you enter IMU, make sure that you RESPECT yourself and your peers. These rules are not optional, compliance is required. Failure to comply will result in the appropriate disciplinary actions. If you have any questions about the rules of IMU or need clarification, let me know.

Grading Policy

At IMU, there are assignments, projects, and assessments that you will be responsible for. The breakdown of the grading structure for each grading period is as follows:

|IMU Grading Item |Percentage Value |

|Homework |10% |

|Textbook and Worksheet Assignments, *Weekly | |

|Responses to Blog Discussions, and University | |

|Flashcards | |

|Classwork |40% |

|University Binder Evaluations, Pre-SAT Prep, | |

|Cooperative Problem Solving Experiences, Student | |

|Response Systems Activities, and University Labs | |

|Assessments |50% |

|Unit Challenges, Quizzes, and Projects | |

Because I care about you and want you to be successful, extra credit opportunities are available. Also, you are allowed to do test corrections and re-master objectives if you feel that you are unsatisfied with your grade and objective mastery level. There is an option for you to consider if you would like to raise your grade or objective mastery level on an exam:

1. Do all test corrections, come to a G.O.A.L. (Great Opportunity to Achieve Learning) session, and retake an alternate exam. I will take the average of your two scores.

Please be advised that you have to take the retake exam before the retake testing deadline, which is typically one week after the date of the test.

Scholars who demonstrate less than 80% proficiency on any objective MUST report to a G.O.A.L. session to re-master the missed objective.

Special Note on Academic Dishonesty

There is no reason why you should ever feel the need to cheat. When you cheat, you are cheating yourself. If you are caught cheating on ANY assignment, severe disciplinary actions will also be taken. We at IMU feel disrespected when scholars cheat. If you need help with anything, let me now before it is too late.

Absence Policy

Attendance is very important at IMU. The more you are here, the more knowledge you attain. The more knowledge you attain, the greater your chances of helping IMU meet its BIG GOAL of 100% of all scholars mastering 90% of all the TAKS Math objectives.

However, I understand that things come up and that you may have to miss a day from school. If you miss class, it is YOUR responsibility to seek the knowledge that you missed and to make-up any assignments that you missed. You have up to a week from the date that you were absent to turn in any missed work. No exceptions! Remember, I am here for you if you need any help! I care about your success!
