8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES Syllabus

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• Interactive Social Studies Notebook (ISSNB) labeled “Social Studies.”

• Pencil or pen may be used; needed in class daily.

• USB/Flash/Thumbdrive for saving notes on computer to study at home. (An inexpensive or used one will be fine.)

• Assignment book; needed in class daily (furnished by school).

• Social Studies textbook (furnished by school) should be kept at home for homework assignments.

• Chromebook laptop; needed in class daily (furnished by school)

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:

• Homework & Warm-up assignments will be posted on the board & on the Google website.

• Students should come to class on time and complete warm-up and, copy down homework assignment in your SPMS Agenda Book.

• Weekly Assignments and homework will be posted on my website. All assignments will be on my website, I WILL NOT use homework hotline.

• Most assignments will be completed in the students ISSNB even if assignments are completed on Chrome book the students will still use their ISSNB.

GRADING POLICY: Your nine-weeks grade will be determined from these areas:

• Tests/Projects = 40%; major tests will be given at the end of each unit and there will be several projects.

• Classwork = 30%; work completed in class, computer activities, video quizzes, worksheets, group work, etc.

• Quizzes = 25%; map quizzes, Brainpop quizzes, computer quizzes, etc.

• Homework = 5%; reading & writing summaries/facts; etc.

VIDEOS:

• We will view several video clips throughout the year. The videos are shown for a specific purpose (not a free day). You will be required to watch videos and complete a video quiz while viewing. These video quizzes will be graded and counted as a 25% grade. The videos are short and are shown to help you learn and visualize the concepts being taught.

CLASS WEBPAGE:

• Access to our Class Webpage on Weebly will be an important tool for you. If you do not have a computer at home, you can still access websites from any computer (a friend’s, a relative’s, local library, someone’s workplace, etc.) Available to you on the websites will be messages, homework, project info, due dates, class notes, study guides, and even practice tests you can take to help you prepare for unit tests.
