Dear Lady Wildcatters, - Pearland ISD

Girls’ Athletic Upcoming Dates and Events

As we close the 2016 – 2017 school year, there are several of you that will be considering making the transition from middle school PE student to Junior High athlete. This transition is very challenging for some athletes to make. We have included some information below to make this transition smoother.

Physical Packets/Participation Fee: Each athlete is required to have a completed physical on the district form BEFORE the first day of school in order to remain in athletics. The forms must be completely filled out and signed by a physician. All documents requiring parent signatures must be completed (the first 3 pages). If this information is not complete and turned in, then the athlete will not be eligible to participate in any workout or try-out session. A $40 district participation fee is also required upon making the team or entering into the athletics class. Physicals can be turned in at schedule pick-up from 8:00am to 6:00pm or to Coach Gray before tryouts. Participation fee may be paid online using Skyward or may be submitted at schedule pick-up.

Athletics Course: If you are still interested in being in Athletics, instead of PE, you will need to try-out for volleyball or basketball and make the team. Anyone that has a current physical on file is eligible to try-out for ANY sport that we offer. Please contact Coach Gray for further inquiries related to the Athletics Course and/or try-outs for a particular sport.

The Lady Wildcatter Athletic Program has become one of the most competitive and rewarded programs in the area. In order to uphold these standards for the upcoming school year, we are encouraging athletes to start preparing for the approaching athletic season over the summer. The best option would be to attend West Girl’s Strength & Conditioning Camp.

All girls who are signed up for athletics are encouraged to attend the West Girl’s Strength and Conditioning Camp; however, it is open to all incoming 7th & 8th grade girls at West. The camp runs from June 5th – July 6th, Monday through Thursday from 9 am -11 am. The cost is $100 for the entire 5 weeks. No camp on July 4th. This is a great opportunity to get to work with West coaches and gain some physical athletic progress before the school year. Due to the length of the camp it is understandable that your daughter may not be able to attend every day, they can still sign up and attend as many days as possible. Camp forms were sent home on a yellow camp flyer. You can also print one from the district website at click on Departments, Athletics, Camps & Clinics. It is titled PJHW_Girls_Strength_Conditioning_Camp. You can mail in the form with your money or you can turn it in to Coach Gray at West, or you can pay/register online at .

Here are some things that your athlete can do to get ready for athletics next school year.

1. Eat a healthy breakfast every day. Most of these athletes will be getting to school early and then running and conditioning in athletics. We have found that athletes who eat a healthy breakfast are better equipped to handle the conditioning.

2. Drink a lot of water. Try to avoid soda and high sugar drinks. Water helps the athlete stay hydrated and in better condition.

3. Try to avoid junk food, instead choose healthier options.

4. Stretch really well before and after any physical exercise.

We will begin the season with intense conditioning. Below are some things that the athlete can do this summer to help them with the conditioning for the new school year. This program should be started off slowly and gradually built up. You should really focus on these activities if you cannot attend Strength Camp this summer.

1. Sprints (10 per day, 3 times a week - these could be on the track or down the street)

2. Mile (3 times a week, gradually bringing the time down to below 10 minutes)

3. Crunches/Sit-ups (work your way up to 100 per day)

4. Push- ups (using good form – work up to 25 per day)

5. Bleachers (if accessible - 2 times a week)

If you have any questions, please contact me at 218-412-1222 or grayb@.

Thank you,

Mrs. Blair Gray
