World History I
8th Grade Essential Categories
Understanding the past helps us to understand the present. As you learn about civilizations and history, are you beginning to see reoccurring themes? As we learn, think about the information we still do not know and the questions we still have. Learn to view historical events through multiple perspectives and to think about whose voices and perspectives we hear/see and whose are missing. Think about what we can learn from the past to help present and future decision making.
Explanations to help you THINK about the categories.
1. GEOGRAPHY
(Geography, Human Migration, Culture, Warfare, World Politics)
• Explain how geography (location and access to resources) impacted civilization such as where people lived, how people lived, and/or why or where people moved.
2. CONFLICTS AND/OR COOPERATION
(Warfare, World Politics, Economics, Geography)
• Explain ways people and/or civilizations have cooperated with each other and the benefits that result and/or explain reasons why people and/or civilizations have come into conflict with each other and the resulting impacts.
3. ORGANIZATION – LAWS, GOVERNMENT, RELIGIONS, SOCIAL CLASSES
(Civics, Government, Culture)
• Discuss how and why humans organize societies the way they do. Lenses to consider include legal codes, government styles, religions, and/or social classes.
4. RISE AND DECLINE
(Impact of Civilization, World Politics, Warfare, Culture)
• Discuss conditions and/or decisions that allow a civilization to rise and/or cause a civilization to decline.
5. TECHNOLOGY – ADVANCEMENTS
(Technology, Innovation)
• Describe technological or other types of advancements and how they changed to either positively or negatively impact civilization(s).
6. HISTORY – ARTIFACTS
(Historiography, Social Sciences)
• Describe historical artifacts discussed in class and explain what it reveals about and/or how it helps us to understand the history of a civilization.
