Georgia Performance Standards for Chorus/Novice
Strand: Sings alone and with others
MUS.CHO-N.1.1 Vocal Production
The learner will be able to identify basic vocal anatomy, and demonstrate proper body alignment and breathing techniques in order to produce an appropriate choral tone.
MUS.CHO-N.1.2 Scales and Tonal Memory
The learner will be able to sing major, natural minor, and chromatic scales and internalize and sing a series of intervals including 2nds, 3rds, cadential 4ths and 5ths, and octaves using solfeggio in an ensemble.
MUS.CHO-N.1.3 Diction
The learner will be able to reproduce the pure vowel sounds ah, eh, ee, oh, oo, recognize the multiple vowel sounds, and identify and articulate voiced and unvoiced consonants.
MUS.CHO-N.1.4 Aural Skills
The learner will be able to apply listening skills to match pitch and adjust intonation within the ensemble.
MUS.CHO-N.1.5 Blend and Balance
The learner will be able to demonstrate the ability to blend with other singers and sing with attention to balance between voice parts.
MUS.CHO-N.1.6 Expression
The learner will be able to demonstrate and apply dynamics, tempo, phrasing, and textual meaning to all repertoire.
MUS.CHO-N.1.7 Repertoire
The learner will be able to perform secular and non-secular music written in unison and with harmony, with and without accompaniment, in more than one language, equivalent to level M or D literature, found on the GMEA (Georgia Music Educators Association) repertoire list.
MUS.CHO-N.1.8 Conducting
The learner will be able to demonstrate and respond to basic conducting patterns and gestures incorporating stylistic interpretation in simple meter.
MUS.CHO-N.1.10 Concert Etiquette
The learner will be able to demonstrate proper concert etiquette as a performer.
Strand: Plays instruments alone and with others
MUS.CHO-N.1.9 Instrumental Performance
The learner will be able to incorporate classroom instruments to enhance music learning.
Strand: Reading and notating music
MUS.CHO-N.2.1 Reading
The learner will be able to read and sing music equivalent to level M or D literature found on the GMEA (Georgia Music Educators Association) repertoire list, in an ensemble.
MUS.CHO-N.2.2 Notation
The learner will be able to read and write pitches and rhythms from basic aural and visual examples in standard music notation.
MUS.CHO-N.2.3 Notation: Software
The learner will be able to use available music instruction and notation software.
Strand: Compose, arrange, and improvise music
MUS.CHO-N.3.1 Improvisation
The learner will be able to improvise simple rhythmic and melodic patterns.
MUS.CHO-N.3.2 Composition
The learner will be able to create simple rhythms and melodies.
MUS.CHO-N.3.3 Music Technology
The learner will be able to create original rhythms and melodies using available multimedia applications and technology.
Strand: Analyze, describe, and evaluate music
MUS.CHO-N.4.1 Elements of a Choral Score
The learner will be able to listen and describe melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, dynamics, texture, voicing, form, style, and instrumental accompaniment.
MUS.CHO-N.4.2 Performance Evaluation
The learner will be able to describe and evaluate individual and group performances by offering suggestions for improvement.
Strand: Music in relation to culture/history
MUS.CHO-N.5.1 Concert Etiquette - Listening
The learner will be able to demonstrate proper etiquette as an active listener.
MUS.CHO-N.5.2 Characteristics of Repertoire
The learner will be able to identify distinguishing characteristics of secular and non-secular repertoire representing a variety of periods, composers, cultures, styles, and/or genres.
Strand: Music in relation to other disciplines
MUS.CHO-N.6.1 Interdisciplinary Connection
The learner will be able to find and describe correlations between vocal/choral music and other disciplines.
MUS.CHO-N.6.2 Relating Text to Music
The learner will be able to describe and discuss the relationship between music and text in choral literature.
