Course Description

Spanish 2 Grades 9-12 1 credit

Spanish 2 builds on the fundamental skills acquired in Spanish 1. Students expand their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar so that they are able to communicate in Spanish about events in the past, present, and future. Verbal communication is the primary objective, although skill development in reading and writing are also emphasized. Lessons based on cultural awareness and understanding are woven through the curriculum to promote cross-cultural understanding.

Course Prerequisites

Successful completion and credit gained from Spanish 1 are required to take Spanish 2.

Course Objectives

Students in Spanish 2 will demonstrate the ability to communicate in Spanish in a variety of ways. The students will be able to communicate verbally (speaking and listening), and they shall also be able to read and write Spanish at a reasonable level. (3-5 broad topics)(Can also be found at )

Course Outline

➢ Each 9 week period will contain its own grade. This means that with a new 9 week grading period, everyone starts with a clean slate. This way, if a student does not earn the desired grade in one particular grading period, he or she can start fresh with the next marking without the prior grade affecting the new grading period’s progress. Semester exams will be administered at the end of the 1st and 2nd semesters based on material from each of those semesters.

➢ The topics studied will include physical and personality description of oneself and others, activities at school, extracurricular activities, preparing oneself for special events, shopping for clothes, directions on going to places, description of one’s childhood, and family and holiday celebrations.

➢ In case of 100% of Virtual Learning or e-learning, consult teacher website, Google classroom or Canvas for instructions!

Text and Ancillary Materials

The Spanish textbook used will be Avancemos 2 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. A workbook will not be provided. Textbooks are available in hard cover books and online. There will be a class set of textbooks for use in the class. I will register every student with an online textbook for use at home. It is understandable that a student may wish to have a text book assigned to him or her. I assure you that if this is the case, a text will be issued for your student to keep at home for use there.

Supplies

On a daily basis, students need to have a pen (black/blue) or pencil and a composition notebook. One Pack 3x5 index cards (ruled).The students will require a folder for filing exams, quizzes and/or study guides.

Policies and Procedures

The tardy policy of Charlotte High School will be enforced, as well as all elements of the CCPS Code of Student Conduct. Electronic devices will not be permitted to be used in class unless given specific permission by the teacher. If it is determined that an electronic device is being used inappropriately, the device will be confiscated and turned in to the appropriate grade level dean.

Also, all tests and quizzes in this class will be kept in the student’s individual folder. The student can have access to that folder at any appropriate time, it will be used as study guides for end of the semester exams.

Grading

➢ Grades will be calculated on a total point basis. I do not weight categories.

➢ Your student’s grade will consist of tests, quizzes, oral tests, dictations, class work, group assignments, presentations, and participation. The students will complete a minimum of 25 graded class assignments per quarter.

➢ In the event of student absence, the district policy on making up work will be followed. For each day a student is absent, two days will be permitted for that assignment to be turned in.

➢ Students will be given a user name and password from the school that will assist the student in tracking his or her exact grade in this class at all times. Also, students and parents both are encouraged to access grades on the FOCUS online program to monitor student progress at all times.

90-100% A

80-89% B

2. The course is divided up into four (4) nine (9) Week Grading Periods.

3. Grades will be determined from a breakdown of the following criteria

Whole Group Activities

Small group Activities

Small reading Group/ Group

Vocabulary, Test and Quizzes

Participation

Any unexcused late assignment will receive half the grade.

4. Class Participation involves attendance and student investment in learning.

Course Procedures

➢ Each semester grade will consist of the two 9 week periods grades and the semester exam grade. The semester grade will be calculated on a 35/35/30 basis, meaning that each 9 week marking period will count for 35% and the semester exam will count for 30% for the final semester grade.

➢ Students will be required to do the following in Spanish 2: take notes from teacher lectures, speak in the target language with the teacher and with classmates, work in cooperative small group projects, and receive instructions from the teacher in Spanish.
