Reform in respect of the Police Pistol and Service Pistol matches

In terms of the NPA/NRA/PPC Range Office Reference and Training Manual as it stands, only 9mm Parabellum self-loading pistols may be used to compete with in the Police Pistol A and Service Pistol A matches, while any pistol or revolver in .354 up to and including .455 calibre, with the exception of 9mm Parabellums, may be used to compete with in the Police Pistol B and Service Pistol B matches.

Following representations made and due consideration having been given to possible consequences and implications, 9mm Parabellum self-loading pistols may henceforth also be used to compete with in the Police Pistol B and Service Pistol B matches.

The above allowance is made in an effort to further grow and develop the sport and to allow newcomers and existing members, who might only own a 9mm Parabellum, to compete in more matches.

In instances where the same Range is used for the Police Pistol, Pocket Pistol and Carry Gun matches, in order to try and ensure that the same competitor does not use the same firearm to uninterruptedly compete with in consecutive matches being staged on such a Range, the organizers of Competitions or Championships, should ensure that different matches follow each other (i.e. in no particular order - the Police Pistol match is staged, followed by the Pocket Pistol match and then the Carry Gun match). The matches are then repeated in the order decided on by the organizers for the duration of the Competition or Championship.

Based on the example provided above, as the possibility exists that the same competitor might want to use the same firearm to consecutively compete with in say the Pocket Pistol match following the Police Pistol match or the Carry Gun match following the Police Pistol match, it will still be incumbent and the presiding Range Officer’s obligation to ensure that competitors do not compete in consecutive matches using the same firearm.

Likewise, in instances where the same Range is used for the Service Pistol A and Service Pistol B matches, the presiding Range Officer should ensure the same competitor does not use the same 9mm Parabellum self-loading pistol to consecutively compete with in both the matches.

All Provinces are requested to distribute this Circular to all Clubs and Provincial Range Officers, and Clubs are requested to communicate the info to all members and to place a copy on their Notice Boards, for all to see.

Your co-operation in this regard is appreciated.

Shooting regards

F. O. Roberts

NPA/NRA/PPC Vice President
