Ms. Lane’s 9th Grade English Course – Fall 2013Room 31 Email: jlane@Website: Course Description:Welcome to 9th Grade English The Focus of this class is to improve your student achievement through consistent practice and reinforcement of reading and writing skills. You will build connections from your existing funds of knowledge to new strategies. The curriculum will prepare you for your future successes in your comprehensive high school career. You will be exposed to various genres of literature, and you will practice writing narrative, expository, and persuasive pieces. An Emphasis will be placed upon conventions! In addition, you will expand upon your research skills to compose a research paper. You will also participate in writing prompts, where Ms. Lane will provide and relate to the unit we are studying. These writing prompts will be kept in your personal folder in Ms. Lane’s room. Remember reading and writing can be very enjoyable for a lifetime! You will be required to read 2 books this semester and complete 2 book reports in MLA format by the end of this semester. We will have reading time set aside for you to engage in silent sustained reading each week. Also, this year we will be using a website called “Edmodo” which I am very excited about. On our Edomodo site I will keep you updated on upcoming assignments. On Edmodo I will also upload all assignments and documents on our class homepage so that if you miss class for an activity or illness you can easily print off what you need to do so that you don’t get behind. This will make life easier not only for me but for you and your parents as well. If you are tardy, without a legitimate pass from another teacher, you will be marked as tardy or truant in compliance with Northeast school policy. As for the end of class, the bell does not dismiss you: Ms. Lane dismisses you! Please do not stand at the classroom door or outside in the hallway. Remain in your assigned seat until Ms. Lane has finished closure for the day’s lesson. You will use transitioning time and lunch break for bathroom breaks and personal matters. Please understand that this disrupts your learning environment, along with that of the other students. Do not ask for permission for a pass during the first 10 minutes of class or the last 10 minutes of class. Also, do not interrupt Ms. Lane during lecture or individual instruction for a pass. You must have your student planner filled out with destination and time before Ms. Lane will grant permission. Hall passes are a PRIVILEGE not an absolute right, and you must earn this privilege through positive, consistent efforts in class. Only one student at a time is allowed to leave the room. You will maintain a clean and orderly classroom. Food, drink, and gum are not allowed in the classroom! You will demonstrate total respect for school property at all times.Ms. Lane’s desk, table, and computer are off limits! Please do not mess with the materials in the room that are clearly Ms. Lane’s, including school property. Ms. Lane does not go to your locker, deface your property, snoop through your belongings or sit at your desk. Mutual respect is honored. You will model absolute respect for yourself, peers, teachers, para-educators, substitute teachers, student teachers, administration, maintenance workers, and office staff at all times. This also applies to passing time in the hallway! School property and personal property of peers will be treated with accountability. You will be charged the replacement cost of any damaged school property. You will check out all books through Ms. Lane, and you will return book in proper condition upon completion of each unit. Grading Policy: The LNE GRADING SCALE:90-100=A85-89=B+80-84=B75-79=C+70-74=C65-69=D60-64=D-0-59=FThe grades in this class will be figured on a formative/summative basis, with the formative equaling 20% of your grade and the summative equaling 80%. Your formative work does not have as much weight, because it is considered to be practice. However, you need to complete the formative work on time, in order to do well in class. The summative work is at the end of the unit, in the form of tests, papers, and/or projects. These will demonstrate how much you have truly learned from class. Extra credit is not an option. Upon Ms. Lane’s approval, alternative academic opportunities and modifications will be provided for you to demonstrate essential learning proficiencies. Grades are based on LNE standards. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated! If you willingly give your work or test answers to another student, both you and the other student will not receive credit for that assignment. You are expected to use your student planner to record upcoming assignments and due dates. You will complete some final projects in small groups; therefore, collaboration and delegation is most acceptable, but cheating or slacking is most unacceptable. Even in small groups projects, Ms. Lane grades on an individual basis. Be a TEAM PLAYER! If you have an excused absence, you have 1 additional day per absence to make up missing work. This does not apply to final projects or the research paper. Ms. Lane does not accept work after a unit has been completed. In-class assignements are due at the end of the period. You are on the high school level; it is your personal responsibility to be a self-advocate and a self-starter. Ms. Lane will not be a hovering helicopter! Do not come to Ms. Lane the last week of the semester expecting a miracle if you have not applied yourself! You crisis does not create an emergency for Ms. Lane, especially if you have not completed your work. However, if you need assistance, Ms. Lane is available both before and after school. Ms. Lane’s planning periods are 2nd and 5th. RELAX! As long as you put forth effort and complete your work as instructed, you will succeed this 1st Semester Your first and last name must be on all of your work! If you forget to put your name on your work, no grade can be entered for credit to you. It is your responsibility to access your grades through your student portal for updates and grades. LNE provides this valuable tool for your academic success, so please use this tool to your advantage. Attendance LNE’s attendance policy will be followed. Please read this policy, and remember that any excessive absences or tardies will result in a loss of credit for this course. You are permitted 10 excused absences for the school semester, and upon the 11th absence, you place yourself in a position where you may need to take 9th grade English over again. Due Process:If you choose not to follow the boundaries within this syllabus, the initial consequence will be a stop card, where you leave the classroom, so sit at the desk outside the classroom door. You will fill out this stop card regarding what behavior resulted in removal from the classroom. You will remain seated at this desk, until Ms. Lane has time to conference with you. You will not argue or disrupt the learning environment. You will not wander in the hallway or disrupt Ms. Lane’s students in the hallway. If you choose not to modify or to correct your behavior following the stop card and the conference with Ms. Lane, you will be given a referral to the administration, and your parent/guardian will be contacted. If the above efforts still do not result in proper behavior and performance, a second referral to the administration will be submitted, and the administration will deem the proper consequences. Basically, the stop card and the hallway conference with Ms. Lane is to resolve conflict and to problem solve away from the other students’ presence. All contracts are to seek the support of home and administration for an intervention to your benefit. ***Ms. Lane resolves the right to modify the syllabus throughout the semester. *Please sign this page and return to Ms. Lane!
