High School Course Assignment Principles and Process2020-2021High School Course Assignment Principles and Process2020-2021The Course Assignment Principles were established to have students enroll in the most rigorous courses available. This goal remains consistent with efforts at the state level to ensure rigor in all honors courses taught in North Carolina. Also, at the national level, reform efforts seeking to increase student participation in more rigorous courses continue. To that end, guiding principles have been developed to assist parents, students, and teachers with the most appropriate course assignments.Students will be assigned to the most rigorous and challenging courses based on their most recent end of grade (EOG) and/or end of course (EOC) scores.Parent-Teacher communication is an integral part of the process. It is strongly recommended that parents seek input from teachers as they consider course assignments.Parents may elect to choose a course (level) different from the course (level) assigned.Students whose exam scores do not adequately reflect their performance or abilities will be allowed to take the most challenging courses of their choice.Assignment to an honors course will generally be based on students achieving mid-level four proficiency and/or greater than 70th percentile on the identified exam. Each high school will develop guidelines regarding how course assignments or course level changes will be handled after the school year begins. These guidelines will be communicated to parents and students during the registration period.Teachers and counselors will assist parents when there is more than one course option available based on the exam score.Course assignment will be based on student grades when no recent standardized test information is available.ENGLISH (9th)Rising 9th grade students with a scale score below Level III (<454) on the 7th grade reading EOG exam will be assigned to High School English I and regular English I. 8th grade EOG scale score used will be <458.Rising 9th grade students with a scale score range of 454-460 on the 7th grade reading EOG exam will be assigned to regular English I. 8th grade EOG scale score used will be 460-463.Rising 9th grade students with a scale score range of mid- Level IV (461-467) on the 7th grade reading EOG exam will be assigned to Honors English I. 8th grade EOG scale score(s) used will be 464-47.Rising 9th grade students who score at the top quartile of Level IV (468) or Level V on the 7th grade reading EOG exam will be assigned to Seminar I. 8th grade EOG scale score used will be 471.MATHEMATICS (9th)Rising 9th graders (completing Math 8) with a scale score below 532 on the 7th grade EOG math test will be assigned to Introductory Math and Foundations of NC Math 1.? 8th grade EOG math test scale score used will be below 525. Starting with the courses your child has previously taken and the current course enrollments, each course serves as a building block to help your child achieve his or her high school educational goals. Achieving high school goals will help in achieving postsecondary and career goals. For several years, the school district has been working towards having more students enrolled in the most challenging and rigorous courses. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools uses standardized test scores from End of Grade exams (rising 9th graders) and End of Course exams (rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders) to assign students to courses. When no standardized test scores are available, student grades will be used. The course assignment process is also described on page 2 of the high school registration book.Attached to this letter is your child’s registration card. Circled on the card are the required courses that he or she has been assigned to based on standardized test information. In addition to the circled required courses, you and your child are asked to write in your choices for elective courses. You are encouraged to contact your child’s counselor and teacher(s) if you have questions about course assignments for next year. Also, please note that you may choose a course different than the one assigned based on your child’s standardized test score(s).
