9th Grade English, Mrs

11th Grade English, Ms. Saylor

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Welcome to 11th Grade English. Through the course of the semester you will actively practice reading, writing, speaking, critical thinking, and listening skills. This course will focus on close readings of novels, short stories, poetry, dramas, and will include at least one research paper, along with other critical/analytical/ essays.  English III will also introduce the terminology and literary terms necessary for discussing each type of work. Vocabulary and grammar development will be ongoing on a weekly basis. This course also requires an outside reading assignment per semester.

GRADES: Grades are based on a ratio of total points possible in the class, they are cumulative, not averaged between the quarters/semesters. Student’s points follows a straight scale of 90-100%=A 80-89%=B 70-79%=C 60-69%=D 0-59%=F. I rarely, if ever, give extra credit. If I choose to give some, it will be given at my discretion, but will not be applied until the end of the semester. Participation is worth 10% of your grade. These points will be based on positive participation, behavior/attitude, and promptness. Failing to meet these standards on a daily basis will result in a deduction of ten (10) points for each offense, and a loss of five (5) points for each tardy. If you are tardy, you will not receive credit for the homework due that day. If you are more than 10 min. late, you will receive a referral. If you are truant (30 min. late) you will receive a referral and not be able to make up the points missed that class. These participation points will be totaled and subtracted from your final grade, at the end of the semester. Progress reports requiring parent signature will be distributed periodically. Updated grades will be posted weekly (available onARIESe). If you are failing toward the end of the semester, do not expect a packet of make-up work or extra credit to be given. This is to ensure fairness to all students who worked hard the entire semester and earned a passing grade. Your grades are weighted:

A.R (Outside Reading) = 5% Assessments (includes quizzes/ tests/ presentations =25%

 Writing= 25%            Homework/class work=25%      Final = 10% Participation=10%

 HOMEWORK: Homework is considered an integral part of the Murrieta Unified School District’s education process. Please expect it regularly. However, most of the homework given is weekly vocabulary words along with assigned readings, which you will be assessed on each class session.

MAKE-UP WORK: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the notes and assignments the day before you return. You may find the make-up work in the "absent folder." You may only make up work if you have an excused absence. The time limits for make up work is defined as the total number of days of a cleared absence. You will have ample notice of major assignments/test that are due. If you are absent the day before a major assignment/test, you are expected to do the assignment/test the next day. If you are absent on the day of a major assignment/test, you are expected to do it the day you return to class. If you are absent with a cleared readmit for an extensive period of time (1 week or more) you are subject to receiving partial credit on all make-up work. You are not allowed to make up any worksheets/video quizzes/etc. that we do as a class if you are absent. Please note that all the daily agendas/journals/handouts are listed on my web page @ (murrieta.k12.ca.us) , -staff, faculty, Saylor, homepage. They are updated daily and are accessible to you if you are absent. With this access, there should be no excuses for not having work completed. I encourage each of you to visit my web site! I do not allow make-up quizzes for quizzes you received a bad grade on. NO RE-DOS!!!

LATE WORK: No late work will be accepted, especially homework! Regarding formal papers, I collect them from you as soon as the bell rings. My definition of "late" is turning your paper in to me any time after I collect them. If you turn your paper in during our period any time after I have collected them, your paper will be lowered one grade. I will not accept any formal papers one half hour after class begins. The only exception to this rule is an excused tardy. Also, I only accept hard copies of all papers .

BOOK REPORTS: We will have 1 per semester worth 5% of your grade. Dates and instructions to be given at a later time.

  SUPPLIES: You are expected to provide your own supplies such as: blue or black pen, pencil, paper, and a separate notebook with dividers for this course. Organization is an essential part of your education and future career. Your notebook and supplies will be brought to class every day. Please organize your notebook using the following dividers:

            Section                                                   Divider Name

                1. Notes                                                   NOTES

               2. Assignments                                         ASSIGN

You will need a separate spiral notebook for daily journals. Please bring it to class daily. I sometimes collect them without notice; therefore, if you do not bring it, you lose all points possible. Five (5) points will be deducted from each journal grading if they are not kept in a separate spiral. You must write the daily agenda before each journal. Journals are 2 points for each entry and 1 point for each agenda list.

-Please keep all work. If there is a discrepancy between your grading record and mine, you will need proof in order for me to correct your grade. Your notebook will also be a handy reference in your college career.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY/PLAGIARISM: This is a fair warning. I despise cheating and I will not tolerate it. The guilty will earn an "F" on the fraudulent work, a referral to the principal, parent contact, and teacher documentation on the student’s permanent file. Second offense: same as above, in addition to a teacher/parent/administrator conference and possible suspension.

MS. SAYLOR’S EXPECTATIONS: English is very subjective. Many opinions are given in this class, and it is your job to be respectful, not only to me, but also your classmates. My expectations are as follows:

1. Be responsible. Being responsible means:

                * you will bring all your supplies/texts/notebooks/materials to class every day

               * take responsibility for missed work

         * take responsibility for the grade you earn

                * doing your own work

                * keeping the classroom clean

                * being courteous and encouraging to those who share ideas in class

                * be respectful to the speaker in class

                * copy the homework assignment in your spiral every day

                * not packing up your belongings before the bell rings (I will keep you in class after the bell rings if this becomes a habit)

* eat your food during breaks, and only bring bottled water to class

                * using the restroom during breaks. I will give each student two (2) bathroom/drinking fountain passes a semester. If you do not have a pass and need to use the restroom, you will lose five (5) points. If you do not use your bathroom passes during the semester; they are worth five (5) extra credit points each at the end of the semester. Being in class is essential in order to be a responsible learner.

2. Be punctual. Being punctual means:

                * turning in work/make-up work on time with an attached cleared absence slip

                * being on time to class

                * as soon as the bell rings, have your materials on your desk, be attentive, and ready to work

                * being in your seat before the bell rings (Remember, the bell does not excuse you from the class, I DO) If you leave class before the bell rings, you will receive a zero on everything you did for the period, a referral, and you will lose 10 participation points. To avoid this problem, Please DO NOT line up by the door.

3. Be successful. Being successful means:

                * using your best penmanship and spelling skills

                * typing all major assignments

                * putting forth your best in all that you do

                * using a pen at all times, unless otherwise specified

            * being organized

              * keeping a positive attitude and outlook on assignments

                * always striving to do more than what is asked

              * take advantage of outside learning opportunities

*always striving to learn and improve

Timeline: All major units of study will take approximately 3-4 weeks time. This includes short stories, novels, plays, and research papers. A semester calendar will be passed out at a later date so that you can record nightly homework as well as major assignment due dates.All students are expected to be responsible, punctual, and successful. Students will be rewarded with participation points and positive citizen grades for strong class participation and behavior. Not meeting any of the above expectations may result in a lowered participation grade, parental notification, referral to the principal, detention, or zero on an assignment where appropriate. Remember...you only get out of school what you put into it! ALSO, I DON’T GIVE GRADES, YOU EARN THEM!!!
