The Wilder Family
Hopkins M. & William Wilder, Jr. along with their half-brother, Samuel M. Clyatt, family, slaves and cattle left Lowndes County, Georgia in 1851. They had loaded all their possessions in wagons drawn by oxen and mules. Just imagine going a distance of 250 to 300 miles in that manner. In 1853 they were in what was then Hernando County when Hopkins came down ill and died on April 27, 1853 in Lake Charlapopka. He was buried under an oak tree on the lake shore. As far as I can determine this may very well have been in the vicinity of Inverness as that area was part of Hernando County and it was known as Lake Charlapopka in those days. It could have been by one of the many lakes in the area which were known as the Charlapopka Lakes. A while later in 1854 after Hopkins died, his wife Bathsheba Gross Wilder took charge and led the family to Lake Thonotosassa where they took up residence in the old Lewis home. Tragedy struck the family once again when on September 8, 1855, her fourteen year old daughter, Martha died. Martha became the first person buried in The Thonotosassa Cemetery.
Later on the family moved again but this time it was not all that far. Mrs. Wilder homesteaded 200 acres in the area where the Branch Ranch Restaurant is. Their log cabin was just west of the restaurant. Her son Calf and her granson George both served in the Florida House of Representatives. George was also elected Speaker of the House. The Wilders became leaders in the cattle industry of eastern Hillsborough County. Needless to say the Wilder Family is deeply ingrained in East Hillsborough County and Plant City history.

17. Maine, Gladys
Born: 17 Nov 1928
Died: 1933
I received the following about Bob & Gladys:
I was just surfing the net and was pleased to find your listing for the cemetery since I have family buried there. I grew up on Main Street in Thonotosassa and still have a lot of family there. I can identify two of the unmarked graves in the cemetery. As you go through the gate just to the right of the sidewalk are two concrete slabs with no stones. The larger slab covers the grave of Bob Lee Maine (1894 - 22 April 1948). The other smaller slab covers the grave of his daughter Gladys Maine (17 Nov 1928 - 1933). They were the husband and only child of my great-aunt Beulah Ivie Maine Alderman. I can remember as a child going to visit the graves of Bob and Gladys as she was Aunt Beulah's only child. Also, Viola Hinson has a tombstone in the cemetery and she was the sister of Beulah so her maiden name was Ivie.
I have a lot of fond memories of growing up in Thonotosassa and am pleased to see someone helping to preserve its history. I moved to Tennessee in 1969 but my heart remains right there on Main Street and I go back frequently to visit family who still live there.

Born: 1805 in North Carolina
Married: Vincent Tanner 20 Mar 1825 in Wayne County, Georgia
May have had as many as 9 children. Known names are Catherine, Winiford, Lucinda, Vincent & Nathan
The 1840 census of Wayne County, Georgia lists a "Vinsen" Tanner along with a wife and 9 nine children.
The 1860 census lists a Winiford Tanner living in Hillsborough County, Florida along with Winiford, Vincent & Nathan, her children. The census says she was born in North Carolina and was 66 at the time of the census. She is listed in the 1870 census living with her son Nathan and his family. She is not listed after that so I assume she died between 1870 and 1880. The 3 children living with her were all born in Georgia. Her great-greatgrandson, Charles Armold, provided all of the family member names and information about them. Thonotosassa old-timers Edward Smith and Frank Crosson attested to the fact that she was buried in Thonotosassa Cemetery. According to them her grave was marked by Cypress slabs.[i]

Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery
Fort King Highway
Thonotosassa, Florida 33592
Section 3 Township 28 south Range 20 east
Go east on Main Street to the dead end. Turn left and cemetery was located in the bend in Fort King Highway just south of Fort King Estates.

In the early 1880's W.A. Eliot donated a piece of property on Fort King Highway about a quarter mile north of Florence Avenue with the stipulation that it only be used for a church or school. Carolyn Edwards Fleetwood described this area this way:
"Where Florence Avenue enters Ft. King, there was a small two story building on the corner we called Uncle Mark's oifics, Uncle Mark being LaMarcus Edwards, Sr. At a distance of what would be a city block, and far off the road, was an unpainted house where the Portervint family liven, although they later moved into the office. Across the road was the Gresham grove, and in the grove a packing house, although it was never in operation as far as I can recall. Usually some old bachelor occupied a room in the downstairs of the packing house, although a family of Smiths lived there for awhile. Our large white house was north of the Portervint residence and also on the west side of the road. Next door was the abandoned Episcopal Church and cemetery, then a very small section of grove, and sitting on a wooded lot, the chapel. I would judge the chapel was a quarter mile from Florence, or maybe a little more, but certainly less than a half a mile. The abandoned Episcopal Church had stained glass windows, red carpet and varnished pews, but there was nothing fancy about the chapel. It was just a white building in the shape of a rectangle, and except for the sign wouldn't have been recognized as a a place of worship, as there was no cross, no spire, or bell tower."
In the 1955 Chamber of Commerce minutes I found the following:
"Mr. Jefferson took the floor and gave a history of the old chapel. It was first a public building and school in Thonotosassa in 1884. The ground was donated by a Mr. W.A. Eliot to be used only for school or religious purposes, and if not so used for 2 years, the property to return to Mr. Eliot or his heirs. It was used by various chuch denominations but after a while ceased to be used. Mr. Eliot was dead so the property was put under trustees, Mr. Jefferson was one, and a Mr. Davis. Property was finally sold except a 40 foot strip where the graves were. This was deeded to the Episcopal Diocese and the property now belongs to Mr. Evans except for the 40 foot strip."
A 1938 aerial of the area definately shows a building in the curve of Fort King Highway and another building further north. A 1973 aerial shows an orange grove, so some time between 1938 and 1973 a citrus grove was planted on the site where the church had been. Later on, probably due to a freeze, the citrus trees were all removed. I would seriously doubt if any remnants of the graves will ever be found.
List of burials
1. George Cooper October 7, 1884
2. Owen Mastick no date given but is between the above entry and another for 1886
3. Illegible name 1886
4. Ella A. Clendenning April 11, 1891

6. Robert Archibold Johnson December 18, 1892

Another burial was apparently made even though there is no record of it in the church records. Carolyn Edwards Fleetwood says in her writings that a Gresham baby was buried there. In fact the baby's headstone is the only one she can remember seeing but her father remembered seeing at least 6 wooden crosses marking graves.
Other Burial Sites
Blizzard Family Cemetery
Harry Garland Blizzard, Jr. was born November 29, 1939 and died November 3, 1983. He was buried on family property. The family sold the property in 1986. There is no sign of a grave now. There was a report that the body may was re-interred in Hillsborough Memorial Gardens but a member of the family claims they never were able to obtain proof of that fact.
Indian Graves
Thonotosassa, Fl
There have been numerous Indian remains found throughout the county. Most are in undisclosed locations to keep vandals away. There are also 12-15 ancient Indian mounds in the public lands near Thonotosassa. Recently some bones were found next to a business on US 301 while replacing a septic tank.
Fort Foster
Thonotosassa, Florida
Located at the Hillsborough River crossing just east of US 301.
There is a tour of the restored fort at the Hillsborough River State Park.
There are several Indian and soldier graves there in unmarked graves.
