TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD – 5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD – 5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY

We have discussed throughout the novel the themes of courage and discrimination. Please choose one to write a 5-paragraph essay in reference to how that particular theme underlies the story. On this paper, circle which theme you will write about. Below is an outline of what each paragraph should focus on.

Paragraph 1 – Introduction: Set the stage of the story. Include the setting (both micro and macro). Discuss what life was like during the Great Depression. State your thesis statement (one sentence stating your theme).

Key words that you may want to include:

Great Depression

1933

Maycomb, Alabama

Stock market crash of 1929

Hardships people endured (poverty, farmers losing land, homelessness, sickness, etc.)

Main character(s) / Finch family

Thesis statement identifying your theme

Paragraph 2 – Body: Identify and describe in detail the first example of when a character/characters displays either courage or discrimination. Remember to focus on giving the reader a clear visual in your details.

Paragraph 3 – Body: Identify and describe in detail the second example of when a character/characters displays either courage or discrimination. Remember to focus on giving the reader a clear visual in your details.

Paragraph 4 – Body: Identify and describe in detail the third example of when a character/characters displays either courage or discrimination. Remember to focus on giving the reader a clear visual in your details.

Paragraph 5 – Conclusion: You’re almost there!! Bring closure to your essay. You may want to discuss how the theme is timeless and still is an issue today. You may want to include a quote from a character or an official definition of the theme. You are NOT restating your Introduction!

Some time will be given during class, however, you will need to work on this at home. An assigned due date will be announced one week prior to the due date.

Grading: I have explained and used the Pennsylvania Holistic Scoring Rubric throughout the year. A copy of the rubric is attached. Please use this as a checklist for your final draft and hand in the rubric with your final essay. Essays should be typed, double-spaced, with a 12 point font. This essay will be worth 50 points (10 points for each paragraph). You will also be given a score of 1-4 for each of the 5 categories:

1 – Below Basic

2 – Basic

3 – Proficient

4 - Advanced
