Text: Physical Chemistry for the Biosciences, by Raymond Chang 2005.
Please read all chapters of the book per the calendar. You are responsible for anything in the book not mentioned in lectures.
Chem 3611 is the laboratory companion course to this one, but is administered completely separately. You should have taken it, be taking it, or be taking it soon.
GRADING (on a 116 points possible scale – consider 16 as extra credit)
70-72 = C-, 73-76 = C, 77-79 = C+
80-82 = B-, 83-86 = B, 87-89 = B+
90-94 = A-, 95 or more = A
30 points each for three exams = 90 pts. The third exam will be during finals week, with equal weight.
Exams will be in-class, open-book, but no communication between students allowed. Calculators & notes allowed, cell phones and headgear that might conceal such are not allowed.
1 point each for 36 daily quizzes (not on exam days, nor when a guest speaker is scheduled).
Usually, these will be one of the homework problems selected from the assigned readings in the book. You are expected to attempt a first reading of the chapters, including the homework, before the scheduled lecture. The quiz may be on material in that day's lecture, or before.
IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO WORK THE HOMEWORK IN ADVANCE AND SIMPLY TURN IN THE ONE WHICH WILL BE GRADED, WHEN IT IS ANNOUNCED.
1 point each extra credit for any error or misleading explanation found in the book and written up (first person only). Also given for any incorrect statement of fact caught during class.
Extra credit may be offered on the final exam to bring the average score up to "B" standards.
Persons needing special accommodations are encouraged to discuss their needs with me as soon as possible.
Cheating, disruption of class, or other attempts to circumvent The System will be handled on an appropriate level.
In all cases, the purpose is to develop an understanding of the subject matter. Final grades should reflect the depth of that understanding. I reserve the right to adjust grades accordingly.
