It reflects light from the sun.We cannot see the moon during the new moon phase because it is between the Earth and the sun. The sunlit side is facing away from the Earth.When the moon looks like a half-moon it is in the first quarter or third quarter of the lunar cycle.Even though the moon looks like half a moon, it is called a quarter moon because it is one quarter of the way through its lunar cycle.
