Introduce self ( teacher in role) as Mary Crimmings the Director of Leisure Lands Ltd. (LLL). Are acquiring river and lake sites to set up waterside leisure holidays.

Show them an outline map of the site.

The children are experts (mantle of the expert) on designing leisure sites for families and on getting permission for them.

Ask the children as designers in groups of 4 to come up with a plan for LLL’s new Broads site. What might be included? They use the map to demonstrate. Could be done with Powerpoint !!

Present the plans formally to the LLL Director.

Ask then to work in groups of 4 to create short scenes

( small group play-making) from a promotional CD Rom. Each ends with “Come to Leisure Lands for a family holiday to remember.”

This is shown as a performance carousel.

How will they persuade the divided local council to allow it? We hear a soundscape/collage of persuasive voices ( eyes closed). These are some of the sentences and snippets of sentences that the council planning department has heard.

The children become councillors considering the proposal after having seen the film and heard the voices. Certain councillors have particular areas of concern to voice at a council meeting behind closed doors. Improvise from a particular viewpoint.

➢ Water quality

➢ Litter

➢ Sound disturbance

➢ Tourism

➢ Bank Erosion

➢ Conservation of traditional buildings

Rumours – residents know that the planning is being considered. What are they saying? One minute to spread rumour and gossip as the general public. What different views are being expressed?

Groups of 4. Each group will have a collective voice.

➢ Fishermen

➢ Sailors

➢ Local shop keeper

➢ Pub landlord

➢ Lady newly retired to the Broads

➢ Nature Reserve

➢ Warden

➢ Vicar

➢ Headteacher of village school

Discussion between the above about whether permission should be granted or not.

Press interviews One person in each group acts as interviewer of the rest of the group. The interviews are presented as an outside broadcast in turn or else every person may speak a sentence in role that is eavesdropped as the teachers passes.

VOTE with eyes closed as to whether to allow it or not.
