Clarifications

Diversity is the reality. Inclusion is the goal. Privilege is the barrier.

Valuing diversity is simply recognizing the vast and personalized human experience and taking steps to avoid "normal" and "other" in that process Working for inclusion is the idea that all of those elements of each of us have wisdom and power and can be used productively for the betterment of all

As the saying goes...

If you're not at the table, you're on the table

Quick Inclusion Thoughts

Ask for preferred pronouns when leading introductions Eat somewhere the menu is written in another language Put tampon and pad machines in all ladies rooms Participate in a discussion about Islamophobia Attend events for communities other than your own as a learning exercise and just listen Check the parent and family leave policy for your organization Read a book written by someone you disagree with to learn and not to argue Watch "Through Deaf Eyes" documentary Invite someone to cook food from their homeland for your next event Make sure all the signs in your building have Braille on them Read "White Fragility" Ask your youth what they're worried about instead of telling them what they should be worried about And on and on and on and on
