Toretsky.doc - American Association for Cancer Research

Dear Dr. Foti,

I attended the last AACR meeting where there were a couple symposia on small molecule development and cancer. I think that small molecule development against novel targets, especially transcription factors, is the future of novel therapeutics in cancer and will also inform scientists about the intricate regulation of transcription. Thus, developing small molecule probes to oncogenic transcription factors has become a central theme in my laboratory and clinical work, with publications in Nature Medicine and grants including a recent RC4. In addition, I attended the inaugural Gordon Research Conference on Intrinsically Disordered Proteins this past summer. In 2008 I was selected to participate in the National Academy of Sciences Keck Futures Initiative (NAKFI) conference on Complex Systems, and obtained a follow up grant from NAKFI to develop paradigms of complex systems and collaboration between scientists of different disciplines.

Disordered Proteins are the functional bridge between novel small molecule development and cancer therapeutics because it is the intrinsically disordered regions that bind small molecules. This is an area of rapid development and investigation in the biochemistry and biophysical societies. I would like to volunteer to help bring this cutting edge science to AACR. I would be happy to help in any way possible to bridge the worlds of biochem/biophysics and cancer since these collaborations are likely to drive novel and successful therapeutic approaches in the future. This could take the form of a session at the annual meeting, to potentially, a sponsored conference that focuses on engaging scientists who study disordered proteins to think about the challenges of cancer therapy.

I look forward to hearing from you and supporting the AACR in its mission. I am attaching my recent biosketch.

Best Regards,

Jeff
