CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
Clinical Focus
My clinical and research focus is in the areas of pediatric hypertension and chronic kidney disease. My work to date has led to the development of a multidisciplinary obesity hypertension clinic for children and adolescents. Patients in this clinic (the ReNEW clinic) benefit from an innovative multifaceted approach to this increasingly prevalent condition.

Children are evaluated by a pediatric nephrologist, pediatric behavioral psychologist, pediatric dietician, pediatric occupational and physical therapist and a pediatric cardiologist. Assessment includes 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, echocardiography interpretation, depression and anxiety screening, obstructive sleep apnea screening, and physical function ability. Provision of home blood pressure monitors, pedometers and pediatric focused educational materials and support for successful adaptation of lifestyle modifications are provided.
2016-Present Hopkins Heart Walk and Family Wellness Festival
Event Organizer and Director
Organized and ran this inaugural event to bring together Johns Hopkins Children’s Center medical providers, patients, and their families to address the issues of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and obesity in our community. The goal of this annual event is to promote heart healthy behaviors, highlight Hopkins programs and resources, highlight community resources, and empower and educate families on how to achieve heart health.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Research Focus
My clinical and research focus is in the areas of pediatric hypertension and chronic kidney disease. I am the Medical Director of the Harriet Lane Kidney Center Pediatric Hypertension Program. In this role I have developed a multi-disciplinary clinic (ReNEW clinic) that provides a comprehensive evaluation and treatment approach to children referred for obesity hypertension. Children in this clinic are enrolled in a patient registry that serves as a rich longitudinal database for future clinical research. I am a Principal Investigator of one NIH/NHLBI funded study (EMPower: Electronic Media Powering positive health behavior changes in youth) and am a co-investigator in three other NIH funded studies, the Chronic Kidney Disease in Childhood (CKiD) cohort study, the CKD: Hypertension Adherence in Teens (CHAT) study and the Trial of Dietary Patterns and Sodium Reduction on Blood Pressure in Adolescents (Camp DASH). I am also actively involved in an AHRQ funded study Reducing Diagnostic Errors in Primary Care Pediatrics (Project RedDE) as a Content Expert in Pediatric Hypertension. I am also PI on a foundation grant, Helping Youth to ReNEW. In addition, I am an active member of the CKiD Cardiovascular subcommittee. I am also a collaborating investigator in the NEPTUNE study where I remain an active participant on the Cardiovascular Outcomes committee, the Pediatric Working Group and the Recruitment and Retention committee. I am also co-investigator on an American Heart Association funded grant that will look at intermediate cardiovascular disease outcomes in children with nephrotic syndrome who are enrolled in NEPTUNE.

SYSTEM INNOVATION AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES
System Innovation Focus
I have been involved in several high-impact quality improvement initiatives at Johns Hopkins and nationally. At Johns Hopkins, as a member of the Computerized Alerts Committee I was integral to the development of automated alerts within the electronic medical record that identified children with elevated blood pressure at the time of their clinic visit. I worked closely with the directors of the Harriet Lane Clinic to design these alerts and then studied provider recognition of elevated blood pressure pre- and post-alert implementation. I am now the Pediatric Hypertension Content Expert for an AAP/AHRQ funded quality improvement study which aims to reduce diagnostic errors, such as missed elevated blood pressure, in pediatric practices across the country. I am also involved in the Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric ESRD (SCOPE) collaborative and am the JHU Pediatric Nephrology Division QI Project Co-Leader.
