HEAP Applications are available

Do you need some help paying your utility bills and improving the energy efficiency of your home? The Ohio Development Services Agency (ODSA) offers several programs to help low-income Ohioans, by completing one form. You can apply for Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus (PIPP Plus) and Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP). Households may be eligible for assistance from HEAP if the household income is at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines. Households may be eligible for assistance from HWAP if the household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Households may be eligible for assistance from PIPP Plus if the household income is at or below 150% of poverty guidelines. This program is made possible through a grant from the Ohio Department of Aging, through the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging. AARP volunteers are providing the public free help filing their taxes.

1. Medina Residents: AARP will be at the County Adminastration Bldg. 144 N. Broadway on Mon. and Weds. mornings.

2. Brunswick residents: AARP will be at BAT T.V. (same place as last year) 4274 Manhattan Ave. on Tues. and Thurs. mornings.

A Benefits Specialist can screen you for your eligibility for public benefits and assist you with the application process.

Support Groups

Nifty Needleworkers – Meets every Tuesday and Thursday in the Craft Room at 9:30am.

Painting Group – Meets every Wednesday beginning at 10am in the Craft Room. Bring your supplies and learn different techniques.

Serendipity Bible Study – Meets every Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30am in the Courtyard Room

Medina Seniors Incorporated – a social group for seniors 60 and over – Will not be meeting in the months of January and February. The next meeting is March 10th at 12:30.

Sewing machines are available in the Rec. Room for your mending or sewing projects. Machines and thread are provided.

Watercolor Classes are offered at the Senior Center. Call Jenny for more details.

Parkinson’s Disease Support Group-2/5/15 (Th) at 1:00 in the Dining room.

Friends in Focus, a support group for the Visually Impaired –Call Don Kalman (330) 635-7027 for more info. Next meeting Mon. March 9th.

Alzheimer’s Disease Support Group – 1/21/15 (W) & 2/18/15 (W) at 12:30pm in the Craft Room.

The next Driver Safety class will be held on Weds. Nov. 14th 12:00-4:00. It is free to veterans.

Home Instead Senior Care will be presenting 2 classes at the Office for Older Adults. Both classes are geared toward caregivers caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias.

Weds. March 25th at 1:00, “Techniquiques to handle Challenging Befaviors”.

Weds. April 1st at 1:00, “Activites to Encourage Engagement”.

If you are interested in attending either or both classes call Jenny at the OOA to register.

Diabetic Self-Management Program

If you would like to better manage your diabetes, or if you want to help a family member or a friend, sign up for Fairhill’s no-cost Diabetic Self-Management Program (DSMP) This 6-week class will start here at the OOA on Thurs. March 26th and end on Thurs. April 30th. If you are interested see Jenny. Space is limited. Don’t miss out on better health for you or a loved one.

Line Dancing – meets every Monday at 2pm in the Dining Room. The cost is $3 per class, the first class is free.

Tai Chi Class – every Friday 1:30-2:30 short form. Sandi Harris is the instructor. Fee: $5 per class or $40 for 8 weeks.

Exercise is available Mondays and Fridays at 10:30am in the Healthy Corner Room. This group uses dynabands and light weights to strengthen muscles. Monday & Friday classes are led by a volunteer.

Wii Bowling League takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am in the Rec Room. Scores are posted.

Arthritis Foundation Approved Exercise Classes – meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:15 in the Healthy Corner Room. The class is taught by a certified Arthritis Foundation Instructor from Medina Village. Most exercises can be done while sitting.

Blood Pressure Screenings –at 10:30

Every Tuesday by Medina Village Retirement Community.

Friday Blood Pressure Screenings will be held at 10:00. Provided by: Right at Home on 2/6, Comfort Keepers on 1/17 & 2/20, Always Best Care on 1/30 & 2/27

Yoga Class- Weds. 3:00-4:00 No floor exercises. The instructor is Lisa Wittman. $3 per class.

An attorney from Bates & Perry will be here on Weds. 1/07/15 and 2/4/15 from 10:30-12:30. You must call to reserve your 20 minute appointment.

Elder law questions only.

A representative from Community Legal Aid will be here on 2/12/15 from 10:00-12:00. Call to schedule your 30 minute appt. and to see if you qualify for free legal help.

DANCE, DANCE, DANCE!

Leo’s Jolly Jammers will be rehearsing the 2nd and 3rd Thursdays in the months of January and February at 1:00. Everyone is welcome to come out and listen.

Monday Bingo

Bingo meets at 10:00 on Mondays in the craft room. Prizes are provided by: Always Best Care 1/19 & 2/16

Pinochle Party

Pinochle is played in the Courtyard Room every Wednesday and Friday at 12:00pm…all are welcome!

If you like Canasta, try Hand & Foot. Played every Tues. in the Courtyard Room at 12:00. Friendly instructors are available.

Rock the Jukebox

The Christmas classics were so nice to hear but the holidays are over. We want to put some new songs in. If you have a favorite song or artist you want to hear, let Jenny know. You can search the book, located in Jenny’s office for one of your favorites to add.

Euchre

Euchre is on break until the 2nd Thurs. in April.

Senior Readers Theater Group

I am still looking for a few more people to add to this group. If you are interested let Jenny know. Scripts are read. No memorization involved.

Pool Tables are available for use for everyone age 60 and over. Join the rest of the pool sharks weekday mornings from 8am to 12pm for tips or just for fun. Pool tables are available every afternoon for practicing or bring a partner and play.

Movie Matinee Join us on the last Wednesday of every month for a movie in the Rec Room! The movie is 25 cents and you get a free root beer float.
