Jane Pauley Explores `Your Life Calling'

What do you want to be when you grow up? What is your life calling? Those questions will be explored by award-winning journalist Jane Pauley during her Feature Session today, 12:30?1:30 p.m. in the Valencia Ballroom.

As AARP's Your Life Calling Ambassador, Jane has been interviewing 50+ Americans who have been trying new things--whether by choice or necessity. These AARP-produced profiles have aired each month on the NBC TODAY show since March.

"I've been thinking and talking about `reinvention' for more than 20 years," Jane said. "The `Your Life Calling' segments feature people who've interpreted reinvention in a wide variety of ways. I hope our stories inspire everyone to move toward the future with a positive new spirit, focus and energy--with a little help from a powerful team: my new partners at AARP and my old friends on the TODAY show on NBC."

One of broadcasting's most respected

journalists, Jane has been a familiar face on morning, daytime and primetime television for more than 30 years. She served as the co-host of TODAY from 1976 to 1989, anchored Dateline NBC for more than a decade and in 2004 became the host of her own daytime program, The Jane Pauley Show. That same year, Pauley published her memoir, Skywriting: A Life Out of the Blue, which became a New York Times bestseller.

In her first collaboration with AARP, Jane narrated Picking Up the Pieces, a moving documentary aired by PBS that described the challenges of families struggling to care for soldiers injured in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The program earned Jane and AARP a Gracie Allen Award from the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television for best national public affairs program of 2008.

At today's session, Jane will introduce people who have reinvented themselves in new and different ways. For example, Lawrence McRae of Tuskegee, Alabama,

turned his attention to raising prostate cancer awareness after retiring as a roads supervisor 10 years ago.

Lawrence remembers the Tuskegee Experiment of 1932 to 1972, during which nearly 400 African American men in his hometown were diagnosed with latestage syphilis but not treated. That legacy has impressed on him the importance of follow-up. Lawrence goes beyond education and arranges for screening tests and even treatment.

In a TODAY show "Your Life Calling" segment that aired in August, Lawrence described himself as "just a nobody who's trying to help everybody."

Linda Gray Adds Flair to Today's Movies for Grownups Film Fest

Award-winning actress Linda Gray will be here today to help kick off AARP's three-day Movies for Grownups film festival, hosted by Bill Newcott, entertainment editor for AARP The Magazine. All films will be screened free of charge in the beautiful Chapin Theater, located on Level 3 of the Orange County Convention Center's West Building.

Linda will take questions from attendees following the 2:30?4:30 p.m. screening of her latest film, Expecting Mary. The producers will be here, too. On Saturday afternoon, director Rob Reiner will be here to present his new film, Flipped.

Linda's portrayal of Sue Ellen in the 11year TV drama, Dallas, brought her international fame and critical acclaim. In addition to her many TV and film appearances, Linda has starred in and directed theatrical performances. She recently starred in the London pro- Linda Gray

duction of The Graduate, playing Mrs. Robinson to sell-out audiences and reprising that role on Broadway during Kathleen Turner's vacation from the play.

Here is today's Movies for Grownups lineup.

12:00 p.m.?2:00 p.m. Casino Jack (2010) Pre-release screening Director George Hickenlooper will be here for today's screening! Kevin Spacey gives the performance of a lifetime as Jack Abramoff, the Washington, D.C., super-lobbyist at the center of a significant moneyfor-influence scandal. Abramoff rises to the

pinnacle of insider privilege--then plunges to the depths of rejection and public ridicule. Through it all, his wife Pam (Kelly Preston) and children stand by his side--which is more than can be said for his D.C. cohorts, played by Barry Pepper (Seven Pounds) and Jon Lovitz (Saturday Night Live).

2:30 p.m.?4:30 p.m. Expecting Mary (2010) Mary is a pregnant teenager who's had all the trappings of an upscale life. When

AARP's Movies for Grownups program celebrates and reviews films with story lines, performances and filmmaking that have relevance to the informed 50+ audience.

she runs away from home, a kindly truck driver (Elliott Gould) gives her a lift. Mary finds herself in a downtrodden trailer park in a small New Mexico town, where she learns the real meaning of love, sacrifice and family. The all-star cast includes Linda Gray (Dallas), Cybil Shepherd (Last Picture Show; Heartbreak Kid), Fred Willard (Best in Show), Gene Simmons (Kiss) and Della Reese (Touched By an Angel).

5:00 p.m.?7:00 p.m. Nowhere Boy (2010) Pre-release screening Young John Lennon's search for identity in Liverpool, England, in the home of his buttoned-down aunt (Kristin Scott Thomas) is complicated when, during his teen years, he reconnects with his real mother. One day, John (played by newcomer Aaron Johnson) runs into Paul McCartney, a young lad who's lost his mother to cancer. This film chronicles a period in the rock great's adolescence that few knew about. Nominated for four British "Oscars," Nowhere Boy opens in U.S. theaters on October 8.

True Rhythm, True Blues: Gladys Knight and B.B. King in Concert

Two of America's most beloved musical performers--Gladys Knight and B.B. King--will appear tonight in the AARP Theatre for a 7:30 p.m. concert.

There is only one "King of the Blues." The 15-time Grammy winner was born Riley B. King in 1925 on a cotton plantation in Mississippi. While in his 20s he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tennessee, to pursue his musical career. A radio performance under the catchy radio name "Beale Street Blues Boy" (later shortened to "B.B.") led to steady work.

One night in the mid-1950s while B.B. was performing at a dance in Twist, Arkansas, a few fans became unruly.

Two men got into a fight and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. B.B. raced outdoors to safety with everyone else, but then realized that he left his $30 guitar inside. He rushed back inside to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar. Each one of B.B.'s guitars since that time has been called Lucille.

While in the Army, B.B. was introduced to the music of such guitarists as Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker. "I heard an electric guitar that wasn't playing spiritual," B.B. recalled. "It was T-Bone Walker doing `Stormy Monday,' and that was the prettiest sound I think I ever heard in my life. That's what really started me to play the blues."

His many hits include "Payin' the Cost to Be the Boss," "Caldonia" and "The Thrill is Gone." B.B.'s unique guitar style has influenced thousands of players, including Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck.

He opened the first of his B.B. King's Blues Clubs in Memphis in 1991. One of the locations is here in Orlando, at the Pointe Orlando complex near the convention center.

The great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last 50 years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in pop, R&B and adult contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performances.

As lead singer of Gladys Knight and The Pips, she graced the stage with top 20 hits, including "Every Beat of My Heart," "I Heard It through the Grapevine" and "Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)." The smash hit "Midnight Train to Georgia" established Gladys Knight and The Pips as the world's premiere pop/R&B vocal ensemble.

Gladys later pursued a successful solo career with five solo albums, including the Grammy-winning At Last (2001). In addition

to recording, performing and creating her jewelry line, Knight is also director of the 100-member choir, Saints Unified Voices, who won a Grammy for their album One Voice (2005).

Her 2006 release, Before Me, features gems from the golden era of song, including "God Bless the Child" and the soulful "I've Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good)."

"As I was getting this music together, the title Before Me just rang in my head," Gladys recalled. "I was moved to make reference to those glorious performers that set the pace for me to be a part of this industry--from the great ladies of song Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson to supremely talented gentlemen such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Sammy Davis, Jr. These people made great strides not just with their music, but because of who they were as people."

Both B.B. and Gladys have been strong advocates for diabetes research.

Enjoy this "Green" Convention Center

AARP is pleased to present this event at a convention center with a commitment to environmental stewardship.

In fact, a host of green initiatives may help to earn the Orange County Convention Center a coveted certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

The convention center boasts the largest solar panel project in the Southeast. This photovoltaic system will produce approximately 1,300 megawatt hours of electricity per year. This is equivalent to the power used by 100 typical homes.

Lighting upgrades include 5,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs and 12,000 square feet of LED lighting.

Water conservation efforts are being made outside and inside. For example, the convention center planted 35 acres of plantings that need less water. To prevent evaporation from

traditional sprinklers, the plants are kept moist with 10 acres of drip irrigation. Inside, 600 low-flow, metered faucets are being tested in public areas.

Restrooms feature 100 percent recycledcontent toilet tissue and hand towels, and green-seal certified cleaning products are used throughout the center. Touch-free airblowing hand dryers are being tested. Even

the trash bags are made of recycled content.

At the end of this event, AARP will encourage exhibitors to donate--not discard--reusable supplies (such as pens, pencils, note pads and other functional items). The convention center will then distribute them to local schools and other worthy organizations.

Lee Woodruff Discusses Caregiving and Family Life

As co-author of the best-selling In an Instant, Lee Woodruff earned critical acclaim for the compelling and humorous chronicle of her family's journey to recovery following her husband Bob's roadside bomb

injury in Iraq. Through TV and radio appearances since 2007, the couple has helped put a face on the serious issue of traumatic brain injury suffered by returning war veterans and other Americans.

Excerpt from Lee's Blog

(posted Sept. 4, 2010, on )

When I Am Old

? I will buy new towels and sheets. I will not use threadbare and frayed ones just because I have them.

? I will use all my lotions and potions and I will burn candles. I will not save things for later.

? I will never stop dancing alone in the house like a crazy woman to the music from "my era," but I won't criticize what my grandkids will be listening to.

? I'll try to never refer to things as "better in the old days." ? I will sit on my husband's lap more and just simply hold his hand.

Today, with the same candor and clarity, Lee will discuss her life as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend during her Lifestyle Session from 1:00?2:00 p.m. in Room W221.

Lee is a contributing editor for ABC's Good Morning America, reporting on a variety of home and family related topics. She recently published her second book, Perfectly Imperfect--A Life in Progress.

A freelance writer, Lee has penned numerous personal articles about her family and parenting that have run in such high-profile magazines as Health, Redbook, Country Living, Parade and Family Fun. Previously, Lee ran her own public relations and marketing consulting business for 16 years after serving as senior vice president of public relations firm Porter Novelli.

Lee Woodruff will sign copies of her books, Perfectly Imperfect and In an Instant, at the Exhibit Hall's AARP Bookstore from 12:00?12:45 p.m. and 2:15?3:00 p.m.

Lee and Bob founded the Bob Woodruff Foundation () to assist wounded service members and their families receive long-term care services and reintegrate successfully into their communities.

The Woodruffs reside in Westchester County, New York, with their four children.

Martina Navratilova: Getting Back in the Game after Breast Cancer

Throughout her decades-long tennis career, Martina Navratilova has faced some really tough opponents across the net: Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and even Serena and Venus Williams in doubles.

In April, as AARP's Health and Fitness Ambassador, Martina announced: "What I never anticipated was that my toughest opponent would be off the court: cancer. Just over a month ago, after a routine mammogram and subsequent biopsy, I was diagnosed with breast cancer."

Martina will discuss how she got back in the game after this unexpected setback during her Lifestyle Session this afternoon from 4:00?5:00 p.m. in Room W224.

"The day I was told I had breast cancer was my own personal 9/11," she said. "I was completely shocked and the news literally knocked the wind out of me. This is a huge wake-up call for me and just goes to show no matter how much you watch what you eat or exercise, you just never know. It's not

all about eating right and exercising; preventative steps can make just as much, or in some cases more, of a difference. Getting my mammogram literally saved my life."

After a successful lumpectomy, Martina is now cancer-free. She started six weeks of radiation in May. But, as she will discuss today, her battle wasn't only physical. The emotional and psychological ups and towns were tough. To get through it, she drew strength from friends, family and fans; learned to listen even more carefully to her body; and maintained a winning attitude, no matter what the obstacles.

Join Martina for a lively Morning Fitness session tomorrow from 7:30?8:30 a.m. in the West E/F Lobby (on Level 2, near the AARP Theatre). You may wish to wear something pink to mark the kick-off of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and show Martina and other survivors how much you care.

During her competitive days, Martina won 59 grand slam titles, including a record nine Wimbledon singles championships. This International Tennis Hall of Fame member was named one of the "Top 40 Athletes of All Time" by Sports Illustrated.

"I don't want people to be sorry for me," she told Sports Illustrated. "I'm lucky that I caught it so early. I look at it as a blessing and a curse. I mean, the curse is I got it. But the blessing is that I can help other women, hopefully, get those yearly check-ups and find out earlier that they have a problem--and save some lives."

A Three-Day Celebration of Caregivers

Do you . . .

Through this event, caregivers will find countless opportunities for learning, sharing and relaxation.

The Exhibit Hall is filled with information about programs and assistance to make caregivers' lives easier. Be sure to visit the Celebration of Caregiving booth in the AARP Pavilion to review a wealth of materials designed to help caregivers navigate their role. You can get answers to questions from professionals who work with older adults.

Here, you can also start a treasure hunt to find helpful information in the Exhibit Hall and enter a drawing for free spa services. Look for the AARP hand-and-heart "Celebrate Caregiving" symbol throughout the Exhibit Hall for products and services that may be of interest to caregivers.

In addition, daily sessions will focus on various aspects of caregiving. Today's sessions include "Perfectly Imperfect" with Lee Woodruff, and sessions that cover great places to live, caring women and tips and technology to change your behind-the-wheel experience.

On Friday at 11:00 a.m., sessions look at the secrets of a long, healthy life and technologies for independent living. In the afternoon, you can learn boomer yoga techniques or how to navigate your way around a physician's office more successfully.

On Saturday, relaxation is the focus. You can learn chair yoga, simple relaxation methods and how to revitalize your home beautifully. An afternoon session also reviews what's in the new health care law.

Nearly 44 million caregivers balance multiple roles everyday while providing critical unpaid care to help their 50+ loved ones. They support their own families, go to work, but still find about 20 hours a week to help mom with cleaning the house or taking a bath, or getting dad to the doctor.

"We know that caregivers need to look after themselves so that they can be fully charged to provide assistance, so taking time off to relax and get a massage or facial is exactly what we're making available," said Elinor Ginzler, AARP senior vice president for livable communities strategies. "We provide care because that's what families do."

? Know more about your mom's prescriptions than your own?

? Wonder if your parents should still be driving?

? Take care of kids, parents and work, but not yourself?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, you are a caregiver or will become one soon.

Staying Healthy: An Overview of Today's Sessions

It's often said, "If you have your health, you have just about everything." Today's health-related Lifestyle and University Sessions provide practical information to help you stay healthy.

Ask. Screen. Know. 1:00?2:00 p.m. in Room W224 Olympia Dukakis and her husband, Louis Zorich, know from personal experience the importance of getting screened for diabetes--especially now that Medicare helps to pay for the blood-sugar test. In this Lifestyle Session, they will discuss their lives; their acting careers on stage, screen and TV; and how a simple diabetes test saved Louis's life.

Attendee Choice! From Fat to Fit: Turn Yourself into a Weapon of Mass Reduction 2:30?3:30 p.m. in Room W221 Attendees voted this their top choice for University Sessions in an online poll. Perhaps it's

Carole Carson because more than 17,000 AARP members are losing weight through AARP's Fat-to-Fit pro-

gram with support from coach Carole Carson. She has turned her personal experience (losing 60 pounds at age 60) into a fun challenge that engages AARP members in eating healthy, working out and motivating each other. Join us!

Caring Women: Things Mama Forgot to Mention 2:30?3:30 p.m. in Room W224 Cooking. Laundry. Doctors' appointments. Transportation. Companionship. The range of issues faced by family caregivers --most of whom are women-- will be explored at this AARP University Session by Marsha Henderson, the FDA's acting assistant commissioner for women's health. In addition, AARP's Elinor Ginzler will share the Association's wide range of helpful resources during this panel, moderated by Victoria

Funes, AARP Florida's associate state director for community outreach.

Our Brain's Perspective on Distraction and Multitasking in the Modern Media World 4:00?5:00 p.m. in Room W230 When faced with a river of information from today's hightech devices (such as emails, text messages and distracting videos), a brain's ability to do many things at once can be compromised. Dr. Adam Gazzaley, a board-certified neurologist and university professor, will share the latest research and insights into this timely topic. Failure to cope successfully with multitasking can harm young people's education and workers' productivity. The remedy might lie within our own brains--or by modifying social trends.

Patty Loveless Lends Her Voice to Battling COPD

Award-winning music star Patty Loveless is known as one of the world's greatest country singers. She is now lending her voice to a public health campaign to raise awareness of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and will discuss that effort during a Feature Session today, 5:00?6:00 p.m. in the Valencia Ballroom.

The Kentucky-born singer grew up in a small town and climbed her way to the top, recording numerous hit albums and singles.

Patty discovered her passion for performing by watching her older sister, Dottie, perform at local venues. At age 11, Patty started strumming a guitar. At 14, she started touring with her older brother and began traveling with well-known performers on summer weekends during high school. Since the release of her first self-titled album in 1987, Patty has consistently rewarded her fans with new and creative music in her unique blend of honky-tonk and country rock style.

Patty has achieved many accolades, including the Country Music Association's (CMA) Top Female Vocalist (1996 and 1997); the American Music Association's Favorite

New Country Artist (1989); and CMA's Album of the Year (1995). She was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1988 and Georgia's Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Her latest album, Mountain Soul II, was released in September 2009. Sadly, Patty's sister Dottie died at the young age of 48 after a difficult battle with emphysema, a form of lung disease known as COPD. Now, Patty is lending her voice to the DRIVE4COPD campaign. This multi-year public health initiative is focusing national attention on this common disease and screening millions of people who may be at risk for it. Today, as an added bonus, Patty will perform for attendees an original song called "Drive," which she composed for the DRIVE4COPD campaign. It debuted in Daytona, Florida, in February during the kick-off for the "Race for the Missing Millions" who may be at risk for this disease. Learn more about COPD by visiting Booths #2461 and #2453 in the Exhibit Hall.

What is COPD?

COPD is a serious lung disease that makes it harder and harder to breathe. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are types of COPD. While it can't be cured, COPD can be managed and treated. With the right diagnosis and treatment, you can take steps that could help you manage this disease and breathe better. Source: DRIVE4COPD
