ABB LAUNCHES DEDICATED FLOWMETER

CALIBRATION AND REPAIR CENTRE

For users of industrial flowmeters who need to keep their instruments running at optimum performance levels, ABB Instrumentation has restructured operations at its Workington site in Cumbria to create what is believed to be one of the world’s most comprehensive centres dedicated to calibration and repair.

The new centre which offers a re-calibration service on any make of flowmeter, integrates existing facilities at Workington with complementary operations located at Stonehouse, Gloucestershire - ABB’s ‘centre of excellence’ for flow measurement. Additional capacity has been created with the transfer of Workington’s traditional flowmeter manufacturing operation to Stonehouse.

NAMAS-traceable calibration rigs are available to test and certify electromagnetic, vortex, variable area, swirl and DP (differential pressure) instruments, and a 27-tonne weigh tank and bridge are being installed for gravimetric testing of flow calibration reference meters. There are also facilities - soon to be upgraded to NAMAS accreditation - for calibrating ABB and third-party temperature sensors and pressure transmitters.

In-house capability to re-calibrate electromagnetic flowmeters from sizes 1mm to 1200mm for typical industrial applications, is supported by ABB’s Stonehouse operation where NAMAS accredited calibration facilities can accommodate larger flowmeter sizes up to 2.4 metres. The new centre also has direct access to ABB’s specialist facilities in Germany for testing partially filled flowmeters.

While re-calibration is available for flowmeters of ABB as well as third-party manufacture, repair work is currently limited to the broad spectrum of ABB instruments, embracing seven different meter technologies addressing 90 per-cent of applications with 20 designs.

Manager of ABB’s Calibration and Repair Centre, Mark Allinson, comments: “High quality calibration is the key to reliable flowmeter performance in the field. Our aim is to provide users with a service that is specific to maintaining the calibration standard of their instruments, irrespective of where they made their purchases.”

Developing Workington as the focus for a dedicated calibration and repair operation forms part of ABB’s flowmeter business rationalisation following the acquisition of Elsag Bailey Process Automation. The factory was originally run by Fischer & Porter and has been a flowmeter manufacturing site since the mid-1950s.

ABB Instrumentation Limited is currently being integrated with ABB’s UK automation company to create a single industrial IT organisation. The new, combined business will trade as ABB Automation Limited, forming a major UK operation within the ABB Group’s Automation Business Segment which totals US $9 billion in annual sales, employs 56,000 people throughout the world and has more than 1,000 operating units in 45 countries.
