FORMULA FACTS - University of Washington
|FORMULA FACTS |
There are several products and infant formulas that can be effectively used for treatment of tyrosinemia. To simplify this document, the formula Tyros 1® is used. Your child’s low-tyrosine, low-phenylalanine formula may have a different name (e.g., Tyrex 1®). The formula Similac® is also used; your child may use a different standard infant formula (e.g., Enfamil®).
Storage:
1. Keep the formula cool and dry.
2. Make sure the can is closed tightly after each use.
3. Refrigerate prepared formula in a covered container and use it within 24 hours of preparation.
Preparation with a Beam Balance Scale
1. Weigh Tyros 1® powder on the scale.
2. Put Tyros 1® formula in a large Pyrex® (or similar) measuring bowl.
3. Weigh Similac® powder on the scale.
4. Put Similac® powder in the measuring bowl.
5. Add about half of the water prescribed.
6. Blend. Most families find it easiest to use a hand-held immersion or “stick” blender. You can also close the container tightly and shake vigorously.
7. Add water to make the total volume prescribed.
8. Blend again.
9. Pour into baby bottles and cap tightly.
10. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Preparation with an Electronic Scale
1. Place container on scale.
2. Press ON/TARE.
3. When display reads 0, add prescribed amount of Tyros 1® powder.
4. Press ON/TARE.
5. When display reads 0, add prescribed amount of Similac®.
6. Remove container from scale and add about half of the water prescribed.
7. Blend.
8. Add water to equal prescribed volume.
9. Blend again.
10. Cover tightly and refrigerate until read to use.
