Word Study Homework Options

Sort Pictures/Words- Your child should sort their picture/word cards like we did in school. Have your child say each picture/word aloud as they sort and explain why they belong in each category.

Buddy Sort- Your child needs to find someone at home to be his/her “buddy.” Your child then needs to say each picture/word aloud and tell what category it belongs in and why. After every picture/word has been placed, the buddy can check for accuracy. Correct if needed. Then the buddy can sort the pictures/words.

Picture/Word Hunt- Hunt for 5-8 pictures/words with your child’s sound or spelling pattern in any book they have previously read. Your child needs to draw and label the picture or list these words in their Word Study book.

Blind Sort- Lay down one picture/word of each category to serve as the category headers. Then say each remaining picture/word aloud to your child and they need to tell you what category the picture/word belongs in and why.

Draw and Label Sort- Pick 5-8 words and draw a picture of the word. Label your picture.

Rainbow Words- Pick 5-8 of your words and pick out 3 different colors. Write the entire first word in one color. Then trace the same word with your second color. Trace your word for the third time with the last color. Repeat with 5-8 words.

ABC Order- Write your words in ABC order.

Sentences- Pick 5-8 words and write them in a complete sentence. Underline the words in each sentence.

Blind Writing Sort- Lay down one word from each category to serve as the category headers. Then say each remaining words aloud to your child and they will need to write the word under the category in which it belongs. Check to make sure the word is in the correct category and spelled correctly. It is highly recommended to complete this sort on the night before the test.
