1. Media Guru Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase"The medium is the message"in his 1964 book, Understanding media: The extensions of man.

2. This idea that the medium that delivers a message influences how that message is perceived continues to be true today, according to Journalism Professor Vince Phillips.

3. Phillips, who teaches multimedia courses at Kansas State University, spoke Monday to about 140 people in a talk titled The Evolution of Media from TV to the Web in Lee Hall at Twain State University.

4. Early television, such as Hopalong Cassidy, which debuted in 1949 as the first network Western, challenged the stereotype that good guys always wear white hats but retained the notion that good guys always win.

5. The 1950s series Superman suggested an upstanding, socially desirable, patriotic spin with its lead-in that said Superman "fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way."

6. He explained that TV programs like M*A*S*H and Saturday Night Live often used humor to deliver commentary on important social issues.

7. With the growth of the Web, television is being challenged as the leading medium by user-controlled social websites like "YouTube,""Facebook" and "MySpace."

8. Phillips said the popularity of online news sites has hurt the newspaper industry to the extent that several major dailies have shut down, including the "Seattle Post-Intelligencer,""Tucson Citizen" and "Rocky Mountain News."

9. Losses in numbers of viewers continue to plague even long-standing but still-powerful network news programs, with "NBC Nightly News" holding a slight lead over "ABC World News Tonight" and "CBS Evening News" trailing at third.

10. The online medium simply suits itself to many 21st-century readers, who get their daily news at The Drudge Report, AOL News, Yahoo News and Google News, Phillips said.
