Greeting 10 minutes

Welcome to course, theme and purpose of class, schedule, orientation to venue, agreements. Welcome to The Path to Inner Bliss, a 4-part introductory series to Ipsalu Tantra Kriya Yoga. In the The Path to Inner Bliss series you develop skills and awareness pertaining to essential aspects of tantra: presence, breath, and pranic energy. In week 4 your learn how to put the basic elements together for a magical daily spiritual practice or tantric lovemaking adventure. This course is ideal preparation for the more intensive Ipsalu Tantra Level 1 weekend intensive.

Ipsalu Tantra is a variety of tantra that focuses on realizing your magnificence, attention to emotional clearing, and yogic techniques for safely activating your most powerful creative energy – Kundalini. “Ipsalu” means “going beyond desires.” This suggests true fulfillment comes, not by meeting the desires of the ego, but by identifying more and more with your divine nature thereby discovering who you truly are. Quintessential to Ipsalu is the Cobra Breath, a spiritual technology which I’ll describe more later, and a method we use for attuning to our highest, most blissful vibration, the Ipsalu Formula. The Ipsalu Formula is a specially choreographed sequence of techniques that quickly brings groups of strangers into a loving connection, as well as couples, when they combine the practice with their lovemaking, and attunes individuals to their own inherent bliss state, especially when used as the basis of a daily practice. Each of these classes features the Ipsalu Formula.

The theme for tonight’s class is “The Bliss of Breath.” The purpose of the class is to deepen your awareness of the breath as you learn specific ways to optimize your physical health, raise your level of emotional well-being, expand your ecstatic capacity and level of conscious awareness.

To create and maintain and safe and sacred space, we have a few guidelines to agree upon:

• Take care of yourself. Be aware of your physical and emotional needs throughout the class and modify exercises if needed.

• Keep confidential any personal sharing

• Set boundaries. Don’t assume bodies are more available to you than normally.

• If you have a problem with someone, go only to that person, not to others

• No cell phones in the room

Introductions/Namaste 20 minutes

Let’s get to know one another. We’ll use the traditional Indian salutation, Namaste. This is commonly translated as “The God in me recognizes and honors the God within you.” In Tantra, we don’t go for separation. A more tantric interpretation, “We are one in the energy of the Divine.” Say your name, allow the rest of us to greet the Divinity within you (Greeting is accompanied by the Namaste gesture (mudra): a slight bow made with the hands pressed together, palms touching, in front of the chest, knuckles of thumbs against breastbone to stimulate heart energy). After you have introduced yourself, take a complete breath in and out. Everyone will breathe with you. As you inhale, receive the Namaste greeting into your heart, exhale as you relax.

Talk Breath Basic to life, Breath as a Bridge, Expansion is Key 5 minutes

The breath is something which is very essential and basic to life. You cannot be alive without breath. Breath and life have become synonymous. Breathing is the mechanism of life, and life is deeply related with breathing. That is why in India they call it prana, one word for both. Your life is your breath.

Your breath has the ability to bridge you, to connect you. . . to your body, to your emotions and sexuality, to your subconscious mind (breath is one of the autonomic functions that is most easily brought under voluntary control), the breath bridges you to the meditative state (to your essence. When your mind is not there, YOU are), to an intimate partner, a lover. Your breath is a bridge between you and the universe. When you experience your breath fully, you experience life fully. (It’s a tremendous spiritual gift that goes wherever you go – and its free!)

Whether you wish to experience higher consciousness, greater psychic sensitivity, better health or full body orgasm, the key in expansion of the breath. Chose your eyes for a moment and, without changing anything, just notice your breathing . . . You will probably observe that it is shallow and fairly rapid. Most adults are chest breathers – shallow breathing into the chest, not reaching deep into the lungs. Babies are born as belly breathers, first expanding the abdomen with the breath, then filling the chest. When we take in a complete breath, filling the belly and the chest, we maximize our intake of oxygen. Our bodies function more effectively and we become much more aware of the subtle energies in and around us. We can regain our ability to breath in a slow, deep, and healthy manner through conscious breath practice (pranayama), breathing from the belly on up. Let’s practice.

Pranayama Basics 10 minutes

Complete Exhalation, Abdominal Breath, Complete Breath, Ujjayi Breath

Exhaling Completely: All yogic breathing begins with the exhalation. To exhale completely: Exhale through your mouth and keep exhaling until there is no breath left. Expel all the air from your lungs. Toward the end of the exhalation pull the belly in to squeeze out the remaining air. Relax and let the breath flow back in. (Whenever you feel that the mind is not tranquil – tense, worried chattering, anxious – do one thing: first exhale deeply and retain for a few seconds; don’t inhale. Let the air be out, and don’t inhale for a few seconds. Then allow the body to inhale.)

Abdominal Breathing: (Can be done solo or with a partner. If working with a partner, that person rests their hands on breather’s belly and chest and encourages the chest to remain still while the belly expands). The abdominal breath allows one to breathe deeply into lungs, using the diaphragm. This begins to reset our pattern from shallow chest breathing to deep, healthy, belly breathing. Belly expands on the in-breath (while chest remains still) and draws back in on the out breath. (Go around room to check that everyone is able to perform the breath properly).

3-Part Complete Breath: To perform the complete breath, exhale totally and inhale totally. Exhale through the mouth. . . draw the belly in and retain for a few seconds; don’t inhale. Then inhale deeply – as much as you can. Inhale through the nose, expand the belly, chest, upper chest. Again, stop for a few seconds. The gap should be as long as when you held the breath out. If you retain the breath out for three seconds, retain the breath in for three seconds. Continue and make a rhythm of it: breathe out, hold, breath in hold, etc. You may feel a change coming into your whole being as you do this. Your mood may shift; a new climate enters in.

Ujjayi Breath (aka Ocean Breath): Ujjayi is a calming breath. It’s used to control the length and speed of the breath. The ocean "sound" is created by moving the glottis as air passes in and out. As the throat passage is narrowed, the airway is narrowed, creating a "rushing" sound. Practice first and then perform the complete breath with the added ujjayi breath.

IPSALU FORMULA

Shakti Shake 5 minutes (Circle of Fire)

Bated Breath 3 minutes

Charges the body with prana, stimulates high level of energy.

Complete Breath (using ujjayi breath) 5 minutes (no music)

Stills the Mind. Sitting in meditative posture with the spine straight begin the complete breath, breathing just through the nose. Become aware of the gaps between the top and bottom of each breath. As you breathe in, follow the breath fully consciously as it goes down. Notice where it stops. As you breathe out, follow the breath back up. Feel the gap before the breath comes back in. Continue.

Sexercises 5 minutes (On the Transit of Venus)

Maintain quiet mind, expanded presence, as you evoke sexual energy. 1) butterfly stretch 2) lean forward, low back stretch 3) massage sole of foot; breathe earth energy up, caressing inside of legs to sex center 4) easy pose, firebreath movement, adding parts one at a time (pelvic rock, contract/relax, exhale with contraction)

Transmutation Breath II 3 minutes (no music)

Quiet Meditation 2 minutes (no music)

Gently notice depth, rate, and ease of breath

Breathe the Body into Motion 4 minutes (Sweet Surrender)

Allow the movements be inner-guided and soft. Beginning in your own quiet, inward space, breathe deeply and feel the breath opening every part of your body. Move your body with flowing movements, with each part opening and flowing to the next. Use breath to open your chest and heart area. . . your shoulders. . . elbows. . . wrists. . . fingers. . . neck. . . jaw. . . pelvis. . . knees. . . ankles. . . toes. . . spine

Sensuous Dance 4 minutes (Sweet Surrender, cont.). Eyes lowered, begin to dance slowly, sensually, flowing towards the center of the room Explore other bodies with great respect. Use the backs of your hands, not the palms, keep moving. Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth as you caress lightly.

Share. 5 minutes. Describe your present feeling state in 1-2 words. Every step of the formula creates a unique energetic effect. What have we done with the breath so far? 1) to come present and quiet the mind 2) to center within yourself 3) to calm the nervous system 4) to charge up energy in the body 5) to remove energy blockages, increase the flow of prana in the body 6) to activate sexual energy 7) to move and direct energy 8) to energize touch

Talk: Breath and Sexual Energy. 5 minutes

According to Osho, the duration of intercourse will increase in proportion to the relaxation of the breathing. The faster one’s breathing during intercourse, the shorter the duration of it; the calmer and more relaxed one’s breathing, the longer the duration of the intercourse. And the longer intercourse lasts, the more the experience of egolessness and timelessness begins to take place. The more rhythmically and slowly you breathe during lovemaking, (no matter how fast your pelvis may be moving), the more that sexual and emotional pleasure and awareness will circulate throughout your body.

Full, conscious breathing for men means ejaculatory control and full-body orgasm, with or without ejaculation. For women it means the body relaxes, she feels more pleasure, is likely to have her first orgasm sooner and continue orgasming throughout her whole body.

When you are at home, notice what your breathing patterns are while self-pleasuring making love. Be aware of how rapid breathing promotes excitement and muscle tension, and how slow breathing promotes a deeper joy and relaxation.

Power and purpose of transmuting sexual energy. Experiment with the complete breath in self-pleasuring or lovemaking to delay orgasm. You might be pleasantly surprised at the level of intimacy that is possible. When you feel that orgasm is close, perform the complete breath to pull up the energy through your body. This will delay your climax and allow you to build to a higher level. When you do climax it will be more intense.

Let’s practice. Imagine you are getting close to climax (playfully show with body language, rocking the pelvis, breathing in and out through the mouth with sound, etc.), do this with me, now exhale! Exhale all the way, empty the lungs. Pause the stimulation. Slowly inhale through the nose, expand the belly, belly draws in slightly as you fill the chest, upper chest. Hold your awareness at the third eye as you retain the breath for a few seconds. . . Little sniff through the nose, and exhale with a sigh, exhaling gently and evenly. Resume the stimulation. Notice how it feels. You may notice it’s brought you to the next higher plateau of pleasure and excitement. This process of drawing sexual energy up and out of the sex center, distributing it throughout the entire body is the key to delaying ejaculatory orgasm, cultivating full-body orgasm, and enjoying the spiritual benefits of tantra while making love.

BREAK 15 minutes

Talk: A case for not breathing (protection but leads to shut-down). Reclaiming our aliveness. 5 minutes

Breath has deep roots in our being. It is deeply related to our mental/emotional sate. If you observe your breathing carefully, you will see that when you are angry you have a particular rhythm of breathing. When you are in love, a totally different rhythm comes to you. When you are relaxed you breathe differently; when you are tense you breathe differently. You cannot breathe the way to do when you are relaxed and be angry at the same time. It is impossible. When you are sexually aroused, your breathing changes. If you do not allow the breathing to change, your sexual arousal will drop automatically. If you change your breathing, you can change your state of mind. Or, if you change the state of your mind, breathing will change.

A case for not breathing, Breath and emotions. A baby’s first breath is one of panic. Being totally alive unacceptable to half dead parents. Having too much energy created problems. We learned to stifle that aliveness by limiting our breath. We learned at a very early age that when something was too frightening or too painful we could dull our sensitivity to the moment by holding our breath. It had a numbing effect. It got us through many situations we weren’t prepared to deal with. We learned that when feelings arose which were not acceptable to parents we could switch those feelings off by limiting our breath. Just as we used breath to suppress feelings, we can access and bring back into consciousness those dark and hidden parts of the psyche. There is a different and characteristic breathing pattern for every way you feel. You may suppose that we breathe in these characteristic ways because of what we are feeling. The reverse is also true. That if we breathe in the way characteristic of a certain feeling, we will begin to feel that feeling.

Emotional Energies and Breath. Experience the influence of emotional energies on breath pattern 5 minutes

Express through body language, words and breath. Notice characteristic breath pattern for each emotion: surprise, anger, calm, fear, orgasmic rapture (ecstasy). Use body movement, sound/words, and breath

5 Cool Down (Kothbiro)

5 Tree Dance. For grounding. (Morning)

With awareness remaining inside, curl up into a ball. Imagine that you are a seed, about to germinate and slowly grow into a magnificent tree. You start as a seed on the ground. The conditions are perfect for you to grow – lots of sunlight, soft, moist soil. You begin to awaken from your dormant state. Your outer shell breaks open. Your roots emerge and grow down into the earth. Feel yourself rooted to the earth. As you grow and your roots continue to extend into the ground, you strive upwards toward the sunlight. Slowly coming into a squat, then standing, you gather more energy as your leaves begin to unfurl. How tall will your grow? What kinds of fragrant flowers or striking varieties of fruit will you bear? You grow taller and stronger, reaching for the heavens. Everything developing just the way it should and in the time that it should, growing into a great tree. You stand in wonder as you gaze upon lots of other beautiful trees all around you, this magnificent Divine creation.
