Date: July 1, 2010

SUMMARY

Issue for Decision (Consent Agenda)

Should the Board of Regents authorize The Mandl School to award the Associate in Applied Science degree?

Reason(s) for Consideration

Required by State regulation.

Proposed Handling

The question will come before the full Board at its July 2010 meeting where it will be voted on and action taken.

Background Information

In January 2009, The Mandl School submitted a proposal for its first program leading to an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Health Care Administration.

The Mandl School was established as a proprietary school in 1924 for the purpose of training medical assistants in physician offices. The School was a licensed private school offering programs approved by the Department’s Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision in Medical Assisting and related fields of allied health practice until it became a degree-granting institution in October 2005. At that time, The Mandl School was authorized to grant the Associate in Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) degree. The Mandl School currently offers credit-bearing courses leading to the A.O.S. degree in Medical Assisting and Surgical Technologist and certificate programs in the field of Medical Assisting and Dental Assistant. The Mandl School is accredited by both the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Mandl estimates initial enrollment of 50 students in its proposed program in Health Care Administration, rising to 150 new and continuing students in this program by the fifth year of operation.

The Mandl School has undergone a peer review under the Department’s direction and has been responsive to all of the Department’s recommendations related to the applicable Commissioner’s Regulations for degree-granting institutions. The proposed programs meet the requirements for program registration. If the Board of Regents authorizes The Mandl School to award the Associate in Applied Science degree, the Department will register the proposed program and Mandl will proceed to recruit and enroll students for both the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program in Healthcare Administration and the certificate program.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Board of Regents authorize The Mandl School to award the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree
