What Shapes and Ecosystem
What Shapes an Ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms and nonliving objects that are interrelated. An ecosystem is not limited by size. For instance, a fish tank and a lake are both examples of an ecosystem. Terrestrial ecosystems, as the root "terr" implies, are those systems occurring on the ground, as opposed to marine ecosystems, which deal with the oceans. There are four major groupings of terrestrial ecosystems and two types of aquatic ecosystems
On the sheet provided, you are to create a picture of all the biotic and abiotic factors that shape an ecosystem. Choose from the following :
Terrestrial: Forests, grasslands, deserts, mountain
Aquatic: Freshwater: lakes, rivers, ponds, wetlands
Marine: Oceans (salt water)
Step 1: Write the ecosystem name in the center of the circle (LARGE)
Step 2: Split the circle into two equal halves (with a line)
Step 3: Label one half of the circle biotic factors and the other abiotic factors.
Step 4: From the list below choose only the factors that apply to your biome. Place each term with a picture into the correct category (Abiotic or biotic).
Step 5: Look at the items on both sides of your visual and draw three double arrows
from organisms on the biotic side to items that they rely on items the abiotic side of your visual.
Step 6: Write a paragraph where you pick one biotic organism from your biome and describe its habitat and niche. (Where it lives, what it eats, its foraging route, when it is active, organism interactions, and so on). How does the chosen biotic organism rely on the abiotic resources? What type of community interactions would the biotic factors have with others in the ecosystem?
