LEEP Patient Information

Description of Procedure

Colposcopy:

1. This test allows the provider to view the cervical cells through magnification. This test can detect abnormal cells on the cervix that cannot be seen with the eye alone. This test helps to ensure that there is NO underlying cancer present. A colposcopy does NOT treat the abnormal cells; it just confirms the abnormal cells match the abnormal cells found on the pap test.

2. For the colposcopy procedure a speculum in placed in the vagina. Vinegar is applied to the area of abnormal cells (it allows the abnormal cells to stand out by dehydrating them).

3. The tissue samples are sent to pathology to be reviewed after the procedure.

Loop electrosurgical excision (LEEP):

1. This is a procedure that removes abnormal cells of the cervix. This is done in the office using a cervical block for pain control.

2. The abnormal cells are removed with a thin wire loop that carries an electric current used to remove abnormal areas of the cervix. This procedure removes the lesion and at the same time minimizes blood loss.

3. The tissue samples are sent to pathology to be reviewed after the procedure.

To promote healing of the cervix and lessen discomfort, please follow these guidelines:

Resume usual activities after leaving today.

You may shower or bathe in a tub. Avoid hot tubs or swimming for one week.

For the next week, do not insert anything into your vagina. This includes tampons, douching, and sexual intercourse.

You may have mild cramping in your lower abdomen for one to two days. You may take Ibuprofen such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve or Tylenol if you are not allergic to it. Please follow the instructions on the bottle. If your pain is moderate or severe you need to call to our office.

After Procedure Information

You may have some small amount of dark or bright red spotting for one to two days. This may last for up to one week. Use pads only (no tampons) for any bleeding. Do not be alarmed if your period is off-schedule this month. If your bleeding is heavier than 1 pad in an hour then you need to call to our office.

It usually takes about 2 weeks to get the pathology report back.

Call the office if you have:

Vaginal bleeding heavier than a period

Severe abdominal cramping or pain

Fever greater than 101

Foul smelling discharge
