Instead they are being limited by being forced to wait and go to college. High school athletes should be able to turn pro so that they can make money (Greg Bianchi) if they have what it takes. Players with the skill, drive, and determination being forced to go to college, or be one year removed from high school instead of being able to sufficiently support their families with their profession looks negatively upon our nation's character.America should give everyone a right to pursue their dreams, and not hinder them in any way. Limiting these young athletes by making them detour in their route to the American dream contradicts the American way. The general public thinks that high school students need to go to college to find themselves or find a career to pursue. Most student athletes go into college not knowing what they want to study, and sometimes they are not academically ready. Some athletes are dropping out after their freshman year for the draft, as opposed to finishing their degree first (Terricka Johnson). Making these students go to college, and choose a subject to major in so they can play a sport is going to make them rush their decision and may hinder them from having a successful plan if going pro does not pan out.Playing sports is only good for healthy and injury free athletes. Going to college can greatly increase the chance of injury before becoming eligible to turn pro. One might say college level sports and professional level sports might be hurt if athletes skipped over college. It is also argued that the rapid jump from high school to the professional level creates athletes that lack self-control, and who think they are invincible (Greg Bianchi). If an individual has the talent to do great things they should be able to use their talents. Whether or not one succeeds in life is usually a measure of talent, character, and effort (Kevin Van Valkenburg). The top two players in the national basketball association Kobe Bryant with five championships only one short of the national basketball association greatest player of all time and LeBron James that is a one of basketballs greatest stars and a 8 time all-star made the jump directly from high school to the professional level. The national basketball association has superb talent that went directly from high school to being professionals that include, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Amare Stoudimire, and Dwight Howard. The players we see performing at the highest level at the highest level of competition have been working to get to that level as early as fifth grade. They wouldn’t have suddenly developed as players or as people just because they spent two years reading Madame buoyant, attending frat parties, and doing trigonometry (Kevin Van Valkenburg).Athletes Now, compared to Fifteen years ago are having to be more physically conditioned which increases the amount of time spent playing and practicing which can cause an increase of injuries to the modern day athlete. A student athlete that goes to college and has a serious career ending injury not only forfeits their scholarship, and a chance to turn pro. The athlete and their family are also left in financial turmoil (Greg Bianchi).Athletes having the choice to go straight to the professional stage will have great benefits to the athlete as well as the school. The benefit for the school is that the graduation rate will increase as opposed to having players that go to school for two semesters then drop out because of injury or because of going professional.High school athletes should have the right to go professional after graduation. The athletes that could have a chance at stardom and career to support a family should be given a chance to do so. We should not force these athletes to be one year removed from college. After waiting one year, it could be too late for some of these athletes. Having high school students go straight to the professional level could benefit college in a way. Colleges could benefit from having the graduate percentage go up and have the dropout rates go down. Actual high school athletes believe in going professional after high school. There are many speculations that the college level will be hurt if more athletes went straight to the professional level. There are too many college athletes to ever hurt that level (Personal Interview). LeBron James is one of the national basketball association’s greatest players. LeBron did not go to college; still he has one of the highest salaries in the national basketball association. LeBron did not descend from a privileged family, this most likely being the reason that he skipped the college level. High school students have the potential to do great things in their lives without having to go college. This graph is proof that high school athletes have no need for college, the only way to succeed is to have what no college can teach; dedication and a passion.Works citedBae, Ismu. “High school athletes should go to college not the pro level” 1 June 2004.Boneshire, Jared. “The myth of high schoolers failing in the N.B.A” 28 June 2004.Bianchi, Greg. “Age requirement in a professional sport” 5 March 2006.Cohen, Mazlow. “N.B.A’s age restriction is unfair”. 15 March 2007.Hilton, Dan. “Should high school players wait a year before entering the N.B.A DRAFT”? 14 July 2008.Johnson, Terricka. “Athletes skip college to head straight to the pros” 28 August 2009.Lickteig, Mike. “Why high school players should not go directly to the N.B.A “13 February 2012.Phillips, Evan.
