Kindergarten F.A.Q.

What is the age requirement for Kindergarten?

A child must be 5 years old by September 1 to enroll in Kindergarten.  No exceptions are made to this requirement.

How are AM and PM Kindergarten assignments determined?

The CRSD Transportation Department determines the routes for the midday AM and PM Kindergarten busses based on the location of the Kindergarten students in our attendance area for the upcoming year.  The Transportation Department designates students AM or PM accordingly.

Do the AM and PM areas remain the same each year?

While there may be similarities year to year in regards to AM and PM areas, parents should not count on past history since these designations are based on where the current Kindergarten students reside.

May I request either AM or PM Kindergarten for my child?

At registration, you may complete a request form for AM or PM.  Generally, requests will be considered on a first come, first serve basis.  However, other factors, such as the basis for the request (e.g. work/childcare-related vs. preference) or a child’s documented medical or educational program needs may take precedence in some cases.

Is there a guarantee that my request will be honored?

There is no guarantee that your request will be honored.  We do everything we can to accommodate requests for AM or PM, but please know that other factors, such as class size guidelines, must also be considered in these decisions.

When will I know if my request is honored?

You will notified by mail in early August.  The reason for this timing is that the summer often brings new students to us and/or withdraws that may necessitate a change in the number of class sections.

If my request is honored, what will the transportation arrangements be?

Parents making a request for a different Kindergarten session than their child was originally assigned must be prepared to provide transportation for their child at midday (picking up from AM or dropping off for PM).

What is the class size for Kindergarten?

Each year, the district determines guidelines for class size in each grade level.  In the recent past, the guideline for Kindergarten has been 25 students per class.  This is not a class size limit, per se, but a target we seek to achieve if at all possible. This guideline is determined each year and may yet be modified for upcoming school year.

Are there Teacher Assistants assigned to the Kindergarten classes?

Teacher Assistants are hired to support our special education students.  On any given year, there may be Teacher Assistants working in Kindergarten classes but only if we have special needs students who require this extra support.

Is there academic screening/testing of students for entry into Kindergarten?

No.  There are no academic requirements to attend Kindergarten. We accept all students who meet the age requirement.

Will there be an opportunity for children and parents to tour the school?

You and your child will be invited to Kindergarten Orientation which will include a tour of the school and information to help the year begin smoothly for your child.  This orientation, presented by the Kindergarten teachers, will occur during the week prior to the opening of school.  Details about this orientation will be provided with your child’s class assignment letter in August.

How do I stay informed about the school and school happenings?

The best way to stay informed about our school is through our website. To access this site, go to and choose our school from the pull down menu.  On our site, there is a calendar which lists all the school and PTO events and an “e-Friday Folder” which houses flyers/documents we’d have sent home to students in the past.  Council Rock has “gone green,” that is, we severely limit the paper copies we send home for announcements/reminders.

Who do I ask if I have any questions?

You may call our main office at 215-944-2400 or Mr. John Harlan, our Principal, at

215-944-2407.  You may also contact Mr. Harlan by e-mail (jharlan@).
