Open Access Journals and Browser Extensions transcript

Open Access Journals and Browser Extensions [Video Transcript]If you are trying to access academic sources but aren’t currently enrolled on a University of Northampton programme, there are few options to help you access academic research in the interim period. Open Access Journals:These are free journals databases that allow you to search for open access research. You can search them the same as any other database. There are many legitimate, good quality sites, but you need to evaluate individual sources the same way as you would from any other database.Core is an example of a good cross-disciplinary open access database that will allow you to access a wide range of research. You can search using some simple keywords, like in the onscreen example. You can then use filters to help narrow your results further. Click on the PDF to get full text access to the journal article. It is very similar to other journal databases you might already be familiar with. The directory of open access journals is a good alternative. Browser Extensions: These are third party applications that help you to locate legal, freely available PDF copies of academic research. As with any application, check you are happy with the terms and conditions before installing. Google Button is an example of one of these extensions and can be located in the settings sections of Google Scholar, using the ‘button’ menu. Once installed it will try to locate full text articles. And by clicking on the Google button in your web browser, you will see a list of any PDFs it has been able to locate. Unpaywall is an example of another third-party app that can be used with Google Scholar or other search engines to help you locate full text copies. Once installed an open padlock will appear on your browser to indicate when a full text copy is available. Don’t forget you can still use NELSON to search and collate resources ready for reading at a later date, without the need to sign in. If you open the record you will often find either the abstract or synopsis of the article or book. You can then save the record either using a reference management tool or perhaps by saving the permalinks somewhere safe. Once enrolled, you will be able to access the full text but will have done some of the hard work in locating them already.Don’t forget you can contact the Academic Librarian Team if you need support. Thank you. ................
