College/University Scholarships

To receive scholarships from the college you are considering, you must have completed an application for admission AND a scholarship application.  It is important that you submit applications so that you don't miss out on any scholarship awards.  Most scholarships that students receive come from the college they choose to attend.

 

Performance Scholarships

If you plan to audition for vocal or instrumental music, drama, dance, or any other activity, be sure you find out when auditions will be held at schools you are considering.  Most colleges have fall and spring audition dates.

 

Internet Access

If you do not have access to the internet at home or need help using the internet, we will find a computer at school to assist you.

BETHANY COLLEGE

Founder's Scholarship:   meet two of three criteria--    GPA 3.75, ACT 29, top 15% of class     $5200/year

President's Scholarship: meet two of three criteria--   GPA 3.5, ACT 25, top 25% of class       $3600/year

Dean's Scholarship:   meet two of three criteria--         GPA 3.0, ACT 21, top 50% of class      $2100/year

Other scholarships are awarded during Scholarship Days competition November 16, February 15, or

WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY

General Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on first come basis starting in September for the following fall to encourage students to apply early for admission.  If there is the slightest possibility that you might attend WSU next year, be sure to apply NOW before scholarship money is gone.   Scholarship amounts are based on GPA, ACT score, leadership, work experience, and community service.  Contact the department of your major to find out about departmental scholarships.

 

Wichita State University Scholarship Competitions

*Distinguished Scholars Competition--November 15.  Eligibility:  3.5 GPA, 24 ACT, admitted to WSU by

October 1, complete application packet, participate in competition on November 15.  Amount:  $5000 to $40,000 Gore Scholarship (Myca Stitt, Class of 2001 received Gore Scholarship).

*Wallace Engineering Invitational--November 14.   Eligibility:  3.0 GPA, admitted to WSU by October 1, declare engineering major, complete application packet, participate in competition on November 14.   Amount:  varies up to $15,000.

*Barton School of Business Scholarship Competition--November 14.   Eligibility:  3.5 GPA, 24 ACT, admitted to WSU by October 1, declare business major, complete application packet, participate in competition on November 14.   Amount:  varies up to $44,000 Clay Barton Scholarship.

 

VERNON'S SCHOOL OF COSMETOLOGY INSTITUTIONAL GRANTS

Eligibility:   schedule interview at Vernon's, complete the FAFSA to apply for financial aid, counselor/teacher recommendation, paragraph on why you want to be a cosmetologist.   Amount:  varies.  Deadline: none, but the sooner, the better.

K-State Engineering Scholarship Day Seminar

Eligibility:  pursue engineering degree, participate in Scholarship Day on October 3.  Students who participate and have 32 ACT, 3.85 GPA, and top 10% of class will receive minimum of $4200 per year.  Students who participate and have 29 ACT, 3.75 GPA, and top 15% of class will receive minimum of $1250 per year.  Deadline to register: September 19.

Kansas Junior Miss Scholarship Program

Eligibility:   participate in Kansas Junior Miss competition, grades, interview, talent, fitness, poise.  Amount: varies.  Deadline to apply:  October 1. 

 

Vocational-Technical Education Scholarship

Eligibility:  enroll in vocational program in Kansas vocational or technical school next year, take vocational scholarship exam on November 2 in Wichita.  Amount:  $500 per year ($1000 total).  Deadline to apply to take exam:  October 4  (Can also take exam in March if this date doesn't work).

 

Outstanding Students of America

Eligibility:  3.0 GPA, school activities, community service.  Amount:  $1000.  You do not have to purchase the yearbook to be eligible to apply for scholarship.  Deadline to apply:  October 15. 

 

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Eligibility:   outstanding community service activities since within the last year. One student may be nominated from CHS.   Amount:  state winner receives $1000 and trip to Washington, D.C. in May; national winners receive $5000.  Deadline to apply:   October 15 to allow time for Faculty select CHS nominee.  munity/spirit

 

Washington University St. Louis Danforth Scholars Program

Eligibility:   nominated by CHS staff member based on exceptional contributions to the community, personal integrity, leadership, academic excellence.  Amount:  full and partial tuition to Washington University.  Deadline to be nominated:  October 15.   If you are interested in Washington U. and believe you meet the criteria, let me know.

 

Miss Kansas Teenager Competition

Eligibility:   participate in Miss Kansas Teenager competition, judged on activities, communication skills, achievements, poise, appearance.  Amount:  varies $100 to $2500.  Deadline to apply:  October 15 

 

Coca Cola Scholars Program

Eligibility:  3.0 GPA, activities, community service, leadership; children and grandchildren of Coca Cola employees are not eligible.  Amount:  50 awards of $20,000; 200 awards of $4000.   Deadline to apply:  October 31.  coca-

KU Scholarships

Eligibility:  3.25 GPA.  KU encourages early application.  Apply by November 1 and you will receive   notification of any KU scholarships awarded to you by the end of December.   Apply after November 1 and by the January 15 deadline, you will receive notification of scholarships at the end of March.  admissions.ku.edu

 

VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship

Eligibility:  audio record 3-5 minute essay on "Freedom's Obligation."  Amount:  local and national winners; varies to top prize of $25,000.   Deadline to submit tape:   November 1.  

 

ROTC Scholarships

Eligibility:   participate in ROTC while attending college, enter military as officer after graduation from college.  Scholarships pay tuition, books, monthly allowance.    Application deadline may be as early as November 1.  Check websites for specific requirements and deadlines:

Teens Helping Influence People Award

Eligibility:   academics, leadership, community involvement, do not smoke.  Amount:   $10,000.  Deadline to apply:  November 15.

Barton County Community College Presidential Scholarship

Eligibility:   leadership, community service, extra curricular activities, citizenship, assist with campus activities at Barton.  Amount:  $2000.  Deadline to apply:   December 6.

 

American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship

Eligibility:   written essay.  Amount:  varies $1000 to $4000.  Deadline to apply:   December 6.   for essay requirements and application process

  

Washburn University Leadership Institute Scholarship

Eligibility:  essay on leadership, participate in Leadership Studies program at Washburn.  Deadline to apply:  December 15.  Amount:  varies.  washburn.edu/leadership

 

Heartland Aviation Women of Kansas Scholarship

Eligibility:  purse education in any aviation related field.  Amount:  $500.  Deadline to apply:  December 31. Check out for additional scholarships for those pursuing careers in aviation.

 American Legion Oratorical Contest

Eligibility:   participate in oratorical contest in February, assigned topic for the 5 minute speech will be on some phase of the U.S. Constitution.  Amount:  National winners--$14,000-$18,000; Kansas winners--$150-$1500.  Deadline to register for competition:  January 15. 

 

Colby Community College Presidential Scholarship

Eligibility:  22 ACT, leadership, resume, interview, participate in leadership activities on campus at Colby.  Deadline to apply:  January 24.  Amount:  varies.

 

Sumner-Cowley Electric Coop Scholarships

Eligibility:   parents must be members of Sumner-Cowley Electric Cooperative, short essay on importance of values in the business world.  Amount:  $500-$1000.  Deadline to apply;  January 31.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship

Eligibility:  2.5 GPA, attend two or four year college in the fall, student or immediate family cannot be Wal-Mart employee.  Selection based on financial need, academic record, ACT scores, community involvement, participation in activities, work experience.  Amount: $1000.   Deadline to apply:  February 1

 

Pittsburg State University Honors College

ESA Foundation Scholarship

Vocational-Technical Education Scholarship

Eligibility:  enroll in vocational program in Kansas vocational or technical school next year, take vocational scholarship exam on March 1 in Wichita.  Amount:  $500 per year ($1000 total).   Deadline to apply to take exam:  February 3.

 

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

Kansas Association of Directors of Plant Facilities Scholarship

Eligibility:  parent must be custodial worker, attend a Kansas college.  Amount:  $500.   Deadline to apply:  February 7.

Eligibility:  3.25 GPA, 22 ACT, leadership experience, attend Kansas college/university.  Amount:   $500.  Deadline to apply:  February 15.

 

EF Educational Tours Global Citizen Award

Eligibility:  short essay on being a global citizen.  Amount:  $1000 and 10-day expense paid educational tour to Europe.  Deadline to apply: February 15.  globalcitizen

 

Kansas American Legion Scholarships

Several scholarships are available to you if your parent is a veteran and has been a member of the American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary for the last three years.  If your parent meets the criteria, you should definitely apply for all of these.  Deadline for all: February 15. These scholarships include:

American Legion Scout of the Year

Eligibility: Eagle Scout. Amount: One award of $10,000, three awards of $2000; Kansas Scout of the Year receives $500. Deadline: February 15.

 

Scholarships for Military Children

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY)

Eligibility:   academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service.   Amount: $7500 and weekend at Disney World Florida in June.  Deadline to apply:   March 7. 

 

Ft. Hays State University Music Scholarships

Eligibility:   participate in vocal or instrumental music, audition.  Amount:  varies $500-$1200.  Audition date is March 8.  Deadline to apply:  complete music scholarship application prior to March 8 and schedule audition time.

 

USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships

Eligibility:   adjusted family gross income on 2002 federal tax return of $35,000 or less.   Amount:  $1500/year.  Deadline to apply:  March 15.



 

Free Enterprise Scholars Award

Eligibility:   demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit such as starting own business, participation in activities associated with entrepreneurship, nominated by member of National Federation of Independent Business (call 1-800-634-2669 for help with nomination).  Amount:   $1000.  Deadline to apply:  application must be submitted between January 1 and March 15. 

 

 K-State Phi Gamma Delta Scholarship

Eligibility:  male attending KSU in the fall, leadership, activities, community service.  Amount:   $500.  Deadline to apply:  March 24.

 

McConnell Officers' Spouses' Charitable Association Scholarships

Eligibility:   dependent of active duty, full-time reserve or full-time guard, or deceased military personnel.  Amount:  $1000 - $1500.  Deadline to apply:   March 31.

Eligibility:  1200 word essay on personal finance issues.  Amount:  $1000.  Deadline to apply:   April 1. 

 

Steve Harper Kansas Wildscape Scholarship

Eligibility:  attend four-year Kansas college and major in natural resources or photography, past or current involvement in natural resources or photography.  Scholarship is in memory of Steve Harper, Wichita Eagle photographer and outdoor writer.  Amount:  $1000.   Deadline to apply:  April 1.

 

Edward Zahn Agriculture Scholarship at Allen County Community College, Iola

Eligibility:  major in agriculture at Allen County Community College, 2.0 GPA, work 20 hours per week on the working farm at the college.  Amount:  all college expenses including tuition, fees, room & board, and books.  Deadline to apply:  April 1.

 

World Trade Council of Wichita Essay Competition

Eligibility:  major in International Business at WSU, 1500-2000 word essay on "Impact of Globalization on the U.S. Economy."  Amount:  $1000-$2000/year.  Deadline to apply:   April 8. 

 

Ayn Rand Essay Contest

Eligibility:   800-1600 word essay on The Fountainhead.  Amount:  $50 - $10,000.   Deadline to apply:  April 15.   contests
