Course Syllabus

Our Mission:

The mission of Excel Academy is to serve high school students in Denver that have dropped out of school or that are at-risk of dropping out of school with a proven, data-driven, accountable and high standards education program that (1) produces high numbers and percentages of high school graduates; and (2) prepares graduates for postsecondary success.

Instructional Superintendent Team Goals for AY 2016-2017

1) Ground our work within instruction (regular class observations and feedback).

2) Establish effective systems of progress monitoring of students at each school.

3) Leverage each school’s own instructional/curricular program by ensuring that schools set accurate UIP goals and targets, and then align PD accordingly using results-based PD to ensure success.

All EAHS graduates will demonstrate characteristics within the following areas:

• Key Cognitive Strategies – Students will demonstrate skills involving problem solving, research, interpretation, and reasoning. All with precision and accuracy.

• Key Content Knowledge – Students will demonstrate key foundational content and “big ideas” from all core subjects.

• Academic Behaviors – Students will learn to time manage, possess study skills, set goals, have self-awareness and persistence.

• Contextual Skills and Awareness – Students will be aware of all essential process in order to navigate within college systems. (Admission requirements, affording college, college types and missions, college culture, exposure to college professors)

Course Emphasis: The mission of this course is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.  

Course Expectations: Students are expected to conform to all policies and standards found within the Excel Academy student handbook. Students are expected to participate in class activities every day. Dressing for P.E. is not required however shorts can be worn under pants as well and a neutral colored tee shirt under your school uniform. If boots or sandals are worn to class the student will automatically be given a score of 2 for the day and is not allowed a make-up day.

Grading: Grading for physical education is split into three parts:

Participation- 60%

Physical Assessments - 20%

Tests and Quizzes- 20%

Daily participation is graded on a four point scale shown in the table below. Physical assessments are graded on the performance of the skill being assessed (ex. If the skill is throwing a ball, does the student follow all skill cues correctly?). Finally, tests and quizzes are graded out of 100 points. The academic grading scale will be used to calculate the final grade.

The class website will allow you to keep up with what is going on each week in class. I will also post make-up work and addition resources to assist you in this course.
