Chad Kelly Could Be Late Round GemThis year’s draft class at the QB position has been well publicized for not having great talent overall. As Mike Mayock put it, “I would be scared to death in the top 10,” he told The College Draft podcast.” (USAToday, 2017) With there being so much uncertainty with this class as a whole, and especially at the top, this led me to look at the QB options outside of the consensus top3; Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, and DeShone Kizer. What I realized is how much of Chad Kelly’s game appears suited for the NFL.Kelly’s 2016 season ended in Ole Miss’s ninth game of the season against Georgia Southern to a torn ACL. Kelly had not been playing necessarily as well as in 2015, but he still threw for 2,758 YDS with 19 TD 8 INT while completing 62.5% of his passes. It is hard to predict what his numbers would have been had he played in the remaining contests. For this reason, I compared Kelly’s 2015 season stats against the consensus “top 3’s”.*2016 Trubisky- CP 68.2% YDS 3748 TD 30 INT 6 *2015 Kelly- CP 65.1% YDS 4,042 TD 31 INT 13 Kizer- CP 63% YDS 2,884 TD 21 INT 10 Watson- CP 67.8% YDS 4104 TD 35 INT 13 Kelly also added 500 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on the ground in 2015. Showing off his athleticism and ability to extend plays outside of the pocket. Trubisky did not start until this last season, his first as the starter. One might argue that Deshaun put up better stats. Deshaun Watson was playing against ACC competition, while Chad Kelly was competing against SEC defenses week in and week out. Questions such as “is he a winner?” or “can he win the big one?” are questions we often hear when discussing QB prospects. Kelly answered both of those questions emphatically in the 2015 season. 1. The Ole Miss Rebels led by Kelly beat eventual National Champion Runner-up as well as SEC Champion Alabama 43-37. Next, the Kelly led Rebels defeated Oklahoma State in the Sugar Bowl 48-20. Before enrolling at Ole Miss, Kelly also led East Mississippi Community College to a 12-0 season and a National Championship. The man can win, and on the biggest stages against the best competition. Things such as production, competition faced, winning big games, are all things that Chad Kelly has proven to us and checked the box on. We have not talked about Kelly’s physical tools. “He has the arm to make any throw,” (WalterFootball, 2017) “Top-shelf arm strength and spins a pretty ball with unforced velocity.” (NFLDraftScout, 2017) “When it comes to arm strength, Kelly has more than enough.” (NFLMedia, 2016) Going off pure arm strength and arm talent, there is no question Kelly is top3 in this draft. He combines that overall arm talent with a nice frame standing 6’2” 215 lbs. What separates Chad Kelly most from the group though is his gunslinger mentality. This is something that has gotten him in trouble more than once, but it is also, what makes him a special player. Kelly exudes confidence, as if bringing a fearless factor to the QB position. Its Kelly’s abilities through these attributes that I think ultimately sets him apart from many of his peers. If only this was the complete Chad Kelly story. If so then he would probably be in the conversation of top3 QB’s in this draft. “Has torn the ACL in his right knee twice, also underwent sports hernia surgery prior to his senior year, History of run-ins with coaches, which led to several suspensions in high school and his dismissal from Clemson. Laundry list of off-field red flags that will concern NFL teams about his maturity and decision-making. Was arrested shortly after committing to Ole Miss (Dec. 2014) where he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after he was kicked out of a Buffalo nightclub and told police: "I'm going to go to my car and get my AK-47 and spray this place" while resisting arrest. A few incidents popped up during his senior season, including while at a high school game during the Ole Miss off-weekend where he had to be restrained from storming the field after an on-field incident involving his younger brother.” (NFLDraftScout, 2017) In a draft class starved for quality QB prospects, Chad Kelly in the late rounds could be an absolute steal. Kelly has all the tools; he just needs to put it all together. ?ReferencesBiderman, C. (2017, February 08). Mike Mayock 'scared to death' to draft QB in top 10 of this NFL draft.
