The BCS – A System Worth Speaking Out Against

The Problem:

Our group will make a proposal about getting rid of the BCS in college football. Our group will look at three different aspects of the problem.

• State why the BCS is biased

• Give an example of a school getting shafted by the BCS

• Show a recent Texas Tech team affected by the BCS

The Audience:

The student government president is the perfect audience for our proposal. She is a student at Texas Tech just like the four of us. Our proposal will give a lot of information and resources to convince the president of Texas Tech to send a letter to other Big 12 presidents.

This report would appeal to the student government president. She is a student just like us. She must also appeal to the student body’s wishes. The BCS is not very popular on college campuses. Also, she would not have to do much work to do what we’re asking.

The Goal:

The goal for this proposal is complicated. We will create a proposal. The proposal will be for Lee Bobbitt, SGA President. The proposal will give her information on the BCS. Hopefully, she will review the proposal. She will fill that the information is compelling. Miss Bobbitt send an e-mail to Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey. The e-mail will invite Dr. Bailey to a presentation Miss Bobbitt will put on for Tech administration. If all the following things were to happen, our secondary goal would be for Dr. Bailey to speak out against the BCS.

The following is a brief overview of what the attached proposal entails.

Problem

The BCS system hurts college football. One problem with the BCS system is that legitimate teams sometimes get left out of the BCS rankings. There are undefeated teams and teams with good records that do not get the chance to play in a BCS bowl. Some teams do not get invited because they do not play in strong conferences, or are not ranked highly in preseason rankings. Teams with worse records but who have a strong conference will get sent to BCS bowl games first. We will look examples such as Boise State and Auburn, as well as others. We will also look at how the BCS hurts Texas Tech. Tech is not that has national name recognition as a football school. This proposal will look at the problem in a general overview, as well as specific examples.

The Audience:

You are the perfect audience for our proposal. You are a student at Texas Tech just like the four of us. Our proposal will give a lot of information and resources to convince you to conduct a presentation for Texas Tech administrators.

The BCS is not very popular among colleges. This subject is being discussed all over the Texas Tech campus. We would like for you to speak on behalf of the student body. Also, you will not have to do much work to do what we’re asking.

Solution

The goal for this proposal is complicated. We will create a proposal. The proposal is for you. The proposal will give you information on the BCS. Hopefully, you will review the proposal. We hope you will fill that the information is compelling. We would like you to send an e-mail to Texas Tech University administrators. We would prefer that Texas Tech President Guy Bailey would attend this presentation. If all the following things were to happen, our secondary goal would be for Dr. Bailey to speak out against the BCS.

The Problem

The BCS was implemented to determine the national championship for college football. The BCS uses the traditional bowl system. Teams playing in BCS bowls are determined by computer polls, and two human polls. The BCS includes four major bowl games and the national championship game. There are six conferences that receive automatic BCS invitations: Big East, ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, and the Pac-10. Teams not in these six conferences must finish in the Top 10 in the BCS standings. Many agree that the BCS is incredibly flawed.

Teams not from BCS conferences:

Utah and Boise State are two teams who are from non-BCS conferences. In 2004, both teams went undefeated. Boise State finished the regular season number 10 in the AP poll. On the other hand Utah finishes number 5. Utah was invited to the Fiesta Bowl, a BCS bowl. The played the Big East champion, the University of Pittsburg. Utah won the game 35-7. Two years later Boise State was undefeated at the end of the 2006 season. That year Boise State was invited to play the University of Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Boise State defeated OU 43-42 in overtime. This shows that non-BCS schools can compete with BCS schools

Auburn 2004

In 2004, the Auburn Tigers were ranked 17th by the AP poll and 18th by the ESPN/USA Today poll in preseason rankings. Their season went incredibly well, leaving them with a 13-0 undefeated victory. They finished the season with a No. 2 standing from the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. However, the BCS had Auburn at No. 3 so they were denied a chance at a BCS national championship. Instead the University of Southern California killed the University of Oklahoma 55-19. A few days earlier Auburn defeated Virginia Tech 16-13. Although Auburn plays in the SEC and finished the season undefeated, they were not allowed to play for the national championship.

Auburn, Utah, and Boise State and others have been shafted by the flaws BCS system.

Our Goal

The goal for this proposal is complicated. We will create a proposal. The proposal will be for you. The proposal will give you an array of information on the BCS. Hopefully you will review and consider the proposal. We hope you will fill that the information is compelling.

We would like for you to send an e-mail to all Texas Tech University administrators asking them to attend a presentation that you will conduct. We would also like for you to e-mail asking Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey to attend this presentation. If all the previously mentioned things were to happen, our secondary goal would be for Dr. Bailey to speak out against the BCS.

If this goal is met we believe that the wheels of change can begin within the BCS system.

E-Mail

Texas Tech Administrators –

As student government president I receive suggestions on policies from the student body. I also am asked to speak on behalf of the student body. Recently I received a formal proposal from a group of students. These students would like me to give a presentation on the flaws of the BCS system in college football.

This group of students spent three weeks researching and putting together this proposal. The have put together their research in a form of a PowerPoint presentation. They spent time with me explaining their reasoning, expectations, and research. After meeting with me I feel compelled to give their presentation to you.

The presentation will be on December 3, 2008 at 11 AM in the Student Government Conference Room, located on the third floor of the Student Union.

Please help me in supporting our student body with your presence at this short presentation.

Thanks for your time-

Lee Bobbitt

Texas Tech Student Government President

Statement

The Texas Tech football team has enjoyed unprecedented success this season. Our team has received national attention like no other team in our history. It is this attention that has brought to my attention a major flaw in our college football system. The BCS does not do our student athletes justice. I feel that something needs to be done about the current system. It is time that administrators start asking what is best for our student athletes.
