The Library
The Library has:
• A Librarian – Miss Middleton – who is in charge of running the library
• An Assistant Librarian – Mrs Petteford
• A website – accessed through the BBA School website on the BB Apps page

• Lots of books, including non-fiction (facts) to help with your research and fiction (made up stories) for reading for pleasure.
• A selection of magazines – Match, Xbox 360, The Simpsons, Bliss, Shout, (magazines are for reading in the Library only, they cannot be loaned out).
• Bristol Post (daily local newspaper).
• Computers with internet access (for study and homework use ONLY!! No GAMES!) –You will need to book a computer if you wish to use one – ask the Library staff.
• A dedicated computer for searching on the Library catalogue (Oliver).
If you want to use a computer out of Accelerated Reader lesson time:
• You must book a computer at the main desk with a member of staff.
Borrowing Rules:
• You can borrow up to two books at a time.
• You get to keep the books for two weeks.
• You will be sent an email if your books are overdue, and you won’t be able to borrow any more until you have returned them.
Library Opening Times:
• Before school: From 8.00am
• Break time
• Lunch time
• After School: Until 4.00pm
Rules of Behaviour in the Library:
Everybody is welcome in the Library, but we expect a standard of behaviour if you want to use the facilities.
• No eating, chewing, drinking or running around.
• Respect those students who are working – so always be quiet!
• Do not leave books lying on chairs, tables or the floor, always put them back in their proper place or in the green return box (by the front desk).
• Put your chair under your desk before you leave.
• Only use the computers for work – no games!
• Always log off the computer once you have finished.
If these rules are broken, you could be banned from the Library!

Finding your way around the library:
All fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by author surname, e.g. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is written by Jeff Kinney, so is on the shelf under K; My Secret Diary by Jacqueline Wilson is under W.
All non-fiction books are arranged by subject. Each subject has its own special number, known as the Dewey system. If you want to find a book on a particular subject you need to look it up on the catalogue or on the special boards on top of the shelves. E.g. if you needed a book on Dolphins, this would be under number 599.5 so you would go to the 500s to find it.
Non-Fiction and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) System:
The Dewey Decimal Classification System was developed by Melville Dewey. The DDC system groups books together, so that they are ordered by their subject. The system was invented so that books were easier to find, with those about similar things closer together.

What is Oliver ?
Oliver is the Library’s very own search engine and catalogue. You can use Oliver to search for resources in the Library, just like using Google.
There is a dedicated computer on the library front desk that has Oliver permanently open for everyone to use.
To access Oliver yourself, double-click on the Oliver icon on your desktop.
Alternatively, you can access it via BB Apps on the BBA webpage:

Log in using your usual PC username (e.g. JBloggs211) and password

How to search Oliver:
You can search for books by typing in:
TOPIC
TITLE
AUTHOR
DEWEY NUMBER
AR BOOK LEVEL
The drop-down menu to the right of the search box can be used to narrow your search as well.
You can hover your mouse over each title, or by double-clicking on them will give you more information – the book will be displayed like this:

To see whether a book is located on the AR shelves, or on the main shelves:
If a book shows up on Oliver with AR 5.4 (for example) in the column on the right, then it should be in the obvious AR shelf section. If it is listed on Oliver with three initials next to it (e.g. ‘PIC’ – first three letters of author’s surname ‘Pickup’) above, then this means it will shelved under author surname order on the main shelves.

During Year 7 you will have a library lesson every week and will be reading books on the Accelerated Reading Scheme.
How it Works! 2013-14
1. Accelerated Reader in 2013-14 focuses solely on improving your book level. You and your teacher will monitor your progress and adjust your individual targets with the sole aim of improving your book level.
2. At the start of the year, you will take a STAR Reading Test which gives you a ZPD range. This is a range of book levels within which the test thinks you are capable of reading initially.
3. You will agree an Initial Book Level with your Accelerated Reader teacher, which will be somewhere between the middle and the top of the range.
➢ If you are not a confident reader, you might negotiate to start in the middle of the range. If you want to stretch and challenge yourself, you might negotiate to start at the top.
4. Your Reading Target is to progress at least two book sub-levels per term.
➢ For example, if your teacher agrees your Initial Book Level should be 4.1 at the start of Term One, then you should progress to 4.3 by the end of Term One, and so on.
5. You will use your quiz results to decide whether or not you may progress to the next book level and to make any adjustments your teacher deems necessary to your book level.
➢ If you score 50% or below, you might need to adjust your book level – this must be negotiated with your teacher.
➢ If you score 60% or 70%, you must read another book at the same level.
➢ If you score 80% or 90%, you may progress to the next level.
➢ If you score 100%, you should stretch and challenge yourself by skipping a sub-level. E.g. move from 3.2 straight to 3.4.
6. You will score better in your quizzes if you read books carefully. Therefore, you must read at least two books per term. However, your teacher may give you a higher target. Of course, you may find yourself taking complete ownership of your progress, reading lots of books and moving up the levels as much as you can each term.
Logging in to Accelerated Reader in the Library:
On your web browser, type in:
Add to your favourites!
• Log in as ‘Pupil’
• Username: your PC login (e.g. JBloggs211)
• Password: bba
When you are told by your teacher to take a STAR Reading Test, click on ‘Take a Test’ (bottom of list).
When you want to take a book quiz click on ‘Take a Quiz’.
You can see the books you’ve read and quizzes you’ve done by clicking on ‘View Quizzes and Targets’.
Logging in to Accelerated Reader from home:
Log in as you would above to the reading site.
You can see:
• Your average score on quizzes.
• A bookshelf of all the books you’ve read so far.
• The AR Bookfinder to search for books on the scheme.
Remember – you can’t take quizzes at home!
Finding Books on the Accelerated Reading Scheme:
You can look to see if your favourite books are on the Reading Scheme.
On your web browser (Internet Explorer or Google Chrome) type in:

Remember – you will need to check the AR Level shelves and/or Oliver to see whether it is available in the Library and whether it is currently in stock.
Keeping track of your progress on Accelerated Reader:
The sheet you will use to track your progress looks like this (below) and will be kept in a class folder in the Library.
You will need to carefully record your ZPD range, your Initial Book Level that you have agreed with your teacher, information on each book you read and your % quiz score. The % quiz score will determine which book level you will read next.
