Acceleration Due to Gravity Ticker Tape Lab

Acceleration Due to Gravity Ticker Tape Lab

Name:______________

Problem:  How accurate will the ticker timers be in experimentally determining acceleration due to gravity.?

Materials:  Ticker timer, ticker tape, mass sets, meter stick, old physics text

Procedure:

1. Set up apparatus as shown by Mr. Szeryk.

2. Start ticker timer

3. Drop mass vertically (aiming for the old text to avoid smashing linoleum)

4. Stop ticker timer

Analysis:

1. Create a d (cm) vs. t (s) chart by using the 6 dot (Every six dots are 0.1 s) method.

2. Make a table of values on the graph paper and draw a d-t graph.

3. Sketch a rounded curve on the graph.

4. Make a table of values on a new graph for d versus t2.

5. Find the slope of this graph and remember that d=vt + .5at2 . Therefore the slope is equal to .5a.

6. Find the acceleration of gravity. Remember the accepted value for acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s 2 what is your experimental error?

 Experimental error=experimental value – accepted value x 100%

                                           Accepted value

5. Suggest 3 sources of error in determining acceleration due to gravity this way.
